Glassfeather Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 Did it have food in its crop when you moved it? Was there food in its crop when you found it dead? Did you see the fosters feed it?
Guest IB Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 I would not recommend handling a new born youngster. I've always had the egg floated under the foster pair from the beginning so that the youngster hatches out in the foster pair's bowl.

lordcornwallis Posted April 21, 2008 Author Report Posted April 21, 2008 thanks for all your input, it was actually a chipping egg i moved to the friday pair as one of saturdays had hatched. this morning when i found the squab under the foster mum it was dead but it looked the same size as the one that was alive regards and thanks . so what else do you think? lc
Guest Hjaltland Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 I've found that some hens can be very fussy when it comes to shifting around eggs, they seem to know when something has been changed and on several occasions they've actually dumped out the eggs and started over when I've tried to be clever. I do shift around youngsters with very little problem as long as I have a careful check on dates/times they hatch so the hen is ready to feed milk. Goodness knows what's happened to your hatchling, could be it simply wasnt right in itself and wouldnt have survived anyway... it does happen.
jimmy white Posted May 6, 2008 Report Posted May 6, 2008 as long as your sure you had the dates right,, i would agree with the last paragraph of last post ,,,,this can and does happen
