jimmy_84 Posted June 23, 2008 Author Report Posted June 23, 2008 yes. but if i leave it to nature will she still sit the other egg or will she lay an extra egg i was told they wont sit 1 egg so i am very confused if i leave it i will loose the other egg aswell if i by cance put another egg in her bowl she will or may lay other and sit the 2 tight or is this a doomed mating and let nature take course and wait for 2nd round

Guest IB Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 yes. but if i leave it to nature will she still sit the other egg or will she lay an extra egg i was told they wont sit 1 egg so i am very confused if i leave it i will loose the other egg aswell if i by cance put another egg in her bowl she will or may lay other and sit the 2 tight or is this a doomed mating and let nature take course and wait for 2nd round Hi there - first, its only 2 eggs per round, laid two days apart. They don't sit the 1st egg, they just stand over it (for protection?) until the 2nd is laid, then they start to sit proper. If the 1st has been laid out of the box and is smashed, if you want to rear the second, maybe an idea to put a dummy egg in her bowl now, they'll stand over that which gets them into the bowl, so you have more chance that she will lay her 2nd in the bowl.
pjc Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 whenever I have had a hen lay out of the box on a perch etc and have replaced the egg it has always been infertile! The birds often know best, just let nature take care and she should lay 2nd egg in the bowl unless she is being kept from her box by another agresive cockbird etc. Phil
jimmy_84 Posted June 23, 2008 Author Report Posted June 23, 2008 hi every1 i am not sure now which hen has layed the egg i have been out there with them most of the day watching them and i am now so unsure i think it could be my spare hen that may have layed the egg as the hen i thought it is stood in her bowl as if she is getting nest ready to lay but my spare hen is frantically flying around and going into the flight as if searching for egg Jimmy
