pjc Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 you do get the odd rough shell egg but it is usualy down to a deficiancy of some sort. The second egg may be ok. Phil
OLDYELLOW Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 these egg with a calcium depost on them feel rough and the shell eventualy gets softer and the gets flattened or leaks, i would personaly remove it and swap for a dummy egg as the egg could get stuck to the bird thats sitting it and then you will have to clean bird up if second egg same discard. This is to a calcium defficency in my opinion, add some live natural yoghurt to your feed or some soluable calcium to your water. Have you treated the birds recently as this can also cause this problem.
Guest ljb107 Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 Get some cuttlefish bone and some lemon juice. Squeeze the lemon juice over the pigeons food and scrape the cuttlefish bone over it and it will stick on the lemon juice, give it a good stir and leave over night. Lloyd

Guest IB Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 I agree the condition of the egg is a good way of telling whether the hen is in good nick. But it is also your first guide to whether that it will hatch a healthy youngster. The egg should be white, smooth and eggshell-gloss shiny. The odd knobbly bit (calcium) isn't a definite fail. As you are starting out new, you basically want to start the way you intend to continue - are you happy with this egg?
jimmy_84 Posted June 27, 2008 Author Report Posted June 27, 2008 it seems ok bu ti am going to wait and see what the 2nd egg is like then make a desicion
pjc Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 if the 1st egg was laid last night then put some milk in the water which will be easily absorbed and the 2nd egg tomorrow should be different! Phil

Phil No offence, but it was pointed out in a thread on here recently that birds can't digest milk, they do not have the enzyme lactase. Means its really a waste of time giving them milk. And as I pointed out here, the calcium comes from the birds leg, its really got to be there before the birds are paired up.
DOVEScot Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 Hi every1 i have got a hen layed last nite her egg is an off white colour with an un-smooth feel to it is thsi egg any good or shall i wait and see what 2nd egg looks like plenty of grit and mierals about for them There is a load of things that can cause this, colouring the egg is only one proccess there are about seven layers on an egg so maybe only one of these is affected to make the egg abnormal, health, lack of ability to produce normal eggs, stress during the colouring proccess of the egg, poor diet being the least possible effect if all the other birds are laying normal eggs, more likely the birds inability to produce a normal egg if it does it all the time and stress or just a blip in the proccess if it is a one off :-/
Guest mikkey Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 a few weeks ago a bird of mine laid an egg about half the size it should have been with knobbly bits on it so i chucked the egg...early this week the same hen laid a round of eggs with no shell .......it might seem obvious but is this a calcium deficiency the birds get plenty of grit but i have no minerals and none of the other birds have this problem ??????

Not neccessarily a calcium deficiency, it could be problem continually with the bird or a one off, quite a few times we get a small egg if it is the hens first egg. The bird may not be able to proccess the calcium needed to cover the eggs, no matter how much calcium intake it has, grit is not mainly consumed to produce calcium it is to break down the seeds in the digestive system Billy never fed his birds anything other than best all round or equivelent or cheaper, nothing at all added to the food or water and he had really healthy strong pigeons as some will vouch on the site that got them :-/
