Guest slugmonkey Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 Has anyone tried Glucosimine or Chrondriton the joint supplement, I am curious to know if it will help our birds I was looking at it today at the supply house ???
Chatrace Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 I use Calcium Gluconate during breeding season. Great for the hensto help from calcium deficiency. 1 tablespoon/gallon of water
jimmy white Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 im taking it myself now, been taking it for about couple of months, i think it has helped me slightly, more movement in my neck, but i dont know about giving it to pigeons,,, thats joint flex, glucosamine liquid
ray Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 Ive been useing it the last two month for my knee joints, it works for me, but not for my wife, and its over a month before it started working, so as for pigeons im afraid it might take a while, but what the hell try it use it on one side of your loft, say cocks or hens give it a months trial and see what happens, trial and error if it works good if not youve lost nowt
Guest Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 Must admit that I was a wee bit thrown by this thread. When it first appeared thought it was yet another pigeon product that I had never heard of, but now 'appears' that it is a prescription treatment for a human condition. Nothing wrong in sharing knowledge on personal medication, especially if it will benefit another sufferer, but I think in the interests of safety that in posts of this type it should be made crystal clear exactly what is being 'promoted', and for 'who' - the fancier or the bird.
ray Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 bruno sorry to say your wrong, but its a holland and barrett product you can buy over the counter thats in northeast england and as i dont know where your from it might not be where you live, sorry mate glucosamine is a natural product found in the body for repair to joints and cartilidge, its not a drug at least not here.
Guest Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 Thanks Ray. As I said, some drift in the thread, Rose talking about her Doctor's recommendation implanted 'prescription' in my mind, and that theme was also picked up on by Jimmy. Even its name is misleading. [Glucos] made me think of sugar-based stuff too. :B
ray Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 bruno if she is getting it on prescription at 7 quid a time it will cost her a fortune, there about 3 quid for a 120 at holland and barrett 1000mg, government robbing bs
Guest Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 Always interested in history & research side of medicinal stuff, which usually gives a balanced viewpoint, the plus's and minus's (the side-effects) etc. Can hit a bit of a brick wall though, using keywords, as is the case with this one... much of the web stuff is pure manufacturer's blurb... tend to tell you anything and everything that will clinch a sale, but little or nothing on the proofs supporting the manufacturers claims for the product. :-/
jimmy white Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 i could see where you were slightly confused bruno, i didnt have it prescribed by a doctor, i was told about it,bought it out the chemist and asked the doc, if it would be ok to take it, along with the medication i am on.he said it would be no problem. i really cant see any benefit giving this to a young fit pigeon, but it might help an older favourite pigeon, that has become a bit arthritic,[ i really dont know], but it definately helps some people with arthritic conditions.
Guest Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 Jimmy, glad you spotted that I hadn't a clue what this was, and that I was really confused when you and Rose spoke of using it for joint pain. I've no problems with anything that will help relieve human pain and suffering, And like yourself, I doubt if there would be any benefit giving it to pigeons.
Guest slugmonkey Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 I actually was talking about using this in the birds but after listening to you guys talk I think I will hoard it for myself
jimmy white Posted April 2, 2006 Report Posted April 2, 2006 im still taking glucosamine [,roses advice] due to a arthritic illness, i really dont know if its helped, but its certainly not hindered , and definately no side effects. the difficulty with me is this illness , a.s. is so unpredictable, its hard to say, whats helping or not, i suppose i could fairly say its helped slightly
Tico Posted April 7, 2006 Report Posted April 7, 2006 You will get a better idea of wether its working next autumn when the weather is turning most joint problems ease off when the weather improves like it is doing at the moment. Also its wise to remember that some other medications can flare these sort of joint problems up...like the birth control pill for example.
Chatrace Posted April 7, 2006 Report Posted April 7, 2006 It is good for the breeders to bring the calsium back up. I used 1 teaspoon to a gal of water 2 days a week after the 2nd round on after they lay the 2nd round and again after the 3rd round. just the days each time
