ghost007 Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 I have always used box perches, but have decided to go to the V perch. Can anyone tell me the appropriate alignment and spacing? Thanks
Guest shadow Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 Leave at least 12 inches between perches in both directions
Guest Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 Don't put them in a straight line, put them one up and one down.
Guest Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 Knew it was cold, Snowy, but when did the penguin move in???? ;D

Chatrace Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 I like the one we have. The 2x4s run horizontal instead of vertical and the birds have to turn there vent to the outside to go and it drops past all the other birds who are sitting sideways on the perch. As you see it is also easy to clean with the dividers being cut off 4 inches up from the perch for just one sweep of the scrape.
snowy Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 Knew it was cold, Snowy, but when did the penguin move in???? ;D just see the headlines now! "HOMING PENGUINS FOUND THERE WAY TO THE UK FROM THE ANTARTIC" lol ;D ;D
Guest Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 the birds have to turn there vent to the outside to go and it drops past all the other birds who are sitting sideways on the perch. Quite like the idea and it sparked the thought in my head at how easy it is for silly prejudices (for / against) to gain ground in my mind. ;D I have 10" deep box perches, and I noted that some birds 'drop' to the perch (though don't stand in or trample le sh**, thankfully) while others seem to keep their perches clean and 'drop' to the floor below. Always preferred the 'drop' to the floor birds!!!! ;D Don't really know why. ;D
hooky Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 i like the idea of v perches but they take up to much room having to be spaced out more..box perches are the go for me
symbro Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 i have V perches. two rows work great... however the third row gets crapped on. i plan on removing the bottom rows since the birds dont like sitting on them anyways. (would you if you got crapped on?) i was told that birds dont like their tails touching anything when they crap. so by putting a 1x4inch inbetween, the birds will crap out instead of to the side. personally i like to see the intereaction between two birds sitting on the perches, so i havent put up the board. i wonder if putting that board up would make catching birds much easier. i have an 8x16 foot loft and catching those guys can be a real pain!
Guest coxy Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 the layout depends upon the amount of perches u r puttin up and the amount of birds in the section but always put a few extra perches up helps with condidtion so i have bin tld
Peckedhen Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 I like the one we have. Yep, I've got the same. Actually I think Chatrace first put me onto these perches- and they work brilliantly - 99% of the poop goes on the floor directly underneath the perches. Just a couple of downsides, because the bird is not in a box it doesn't back into it so is harder to catch, also I had a dominant cock who cleared the whole row of top perches by ducking under the dividers.
Guest Posted February 6, 2006 Report Posted February 6, 2006 I've two types of perches - box and bar. Comments on 'difficulty catching birds sat on ^ perches' made me think back to similar 'thoughts' I had with birds sat on my bar perches. Think it took years rather than weeks or months, but I find I now pick the birds up, rather than catch them. Think its a right frame-of-mind thing: a 'Lets have a look at you pal', rather than 'will I be able to catch you'? Granted a lot easier to show a bird the palm of your hand (or cupped hands) and have it back into the back of a box perch, than approach and catch one sitting on a ^ perch, or two or three sat on a bar perch. And in loft design, in my opinion, the less space you give the bird to get around or above you, the better. No use having 7 foot headroom if like me you're only 5'5", and nothing sits above my eye level.
schouwman71 Posted February 6, 2006 Report Posted February 6, 2006 Love those perches, but as peckedhen says you will need very tame young birds to be able to catch them for basketing,or just for looking at.but i really do like the idea .
snowy Posted February 6, 2006 Report Posted February 6, 2006 me too definetly going for the box perches soon in the one section, which will be the young birds, look neat & like you said, easier to handle the birds & looks more roomier.
MsPigeon Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 I have both ^ and narrow box pearches. For sure you can get many more box type in the same space. If the box type are narrow, no wider than 4", less is better, then they are pretty easy to clean. On the ^ type we made the top row slightly wider and each row below slightly narrower so they would not poop on each other. But I really like the look of those horizontal pearches w/cut off dividers. Look very easy to clean. I also saw another type that look easy to clean in the new issue of Racing Pigeon digest. They are just 2x2 horizontal pearchs like you might see in a chicken coop. Long, as wide as the loft, no dividers.
MsPigeon Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 Oh, and for catching the birds in big tall lofts > as I have, and I'm only 5'5" too, I have a system that works for me. I have a crate that just fits on the landing board in front of the flight pen with drop door open. I chase the birds into the flight pen and into the crate. In this way I catch 20 or so at a time ;D, transfer them into the training crates and then do it again. Granted it does take patience :-/ till you get them trained to do this, but then it is so easy and quick ;D and no ruffled feathers, mine or theirs. ;D
