what do you look for in the nest from day one hatchings, or how soon do you start to judge the youngsters: for health and taking a fancy too, any tips? what you looking for, feeding etc.

I like to see both youngster having an abundance of (yellow) if a darker one ever appears( Foxy rather than yellow) so much the better, crops always bulging with parents milk from 2 to 6 days old,  pellets I feed  sparingly and only from about 14 days old, all pellets are digested too easy and will result in overeating and  overfeeding,my last and what I consider my best barometer at this age, lift parent from nest in dark, shine a light directly in to youngsters eye,and watch reaction and speed of muscle, how quickly the pupil changes from small to large, the slower it changes, the quicker they fail these are my preferences re young birds, after that its fingers crossed for the rest of season, very good post Fifer.

Before I even look at the youngster's etc, I always first look at the egg shell, that it hatched from.

Enjoy.

I've found on occassions at times !!!!!!!, that a youngster may leave large traces of blood in the egg shell (Not good in my view) also I do not like to see, in the navel area of a newly hatch baby etc, before it contracts to the normal position. (it should happen quite quickly) part of it left in the egg. (Not good, maybe wrong  ;D ;D) For me, I prefer a egg shell to be as clean on the inside as it should be on the outside, within reason.

Enjoy
