Feeding my youngbirds.

Hi all. Im just wondering how much you feed your youngbirds. They are raking away from the house in the mornings an im considering taking them for there first toss next week. Only problem is i cant seem to get them to trap, they prefer to sit on the loft or lie in the garden after exercise. I am feeding them until they are full at night and there is no food left except a bit of barley. Some people have said to feed youngbirds until they are full and give them as much as they want, but now as it is coming towards the start of the season should i cut back on the food and if so how much per bird would you recommend?

 

I am happy with the way the birds are exercising and looking.

i had the same problem with my young birds, what i did was cut down on the food, and as soon as i let them out i put the food in the loft.  when they land they have now learnt that if they want to eat they have to be first in as once its gone its gone.  i have noted that its not always the same birds who run in first, the birds that were last in the day before usually dont touch the landing board the following day, (straight through the wires) to get food.  its worked for me, might be worth a try

if flying them only on a morning and feeding at night that's your problem feed after exercise much as can eat, we exercise 9.30 on morning feed between 11to 11.30 trap no problem

I would just cut down the feed in the morning till you get them to trap, if we have have a problem at night trapping them we then we sometimes miss out a morning feed and they go in at night a lot quicker

I think i will cut back on the food then. I let them out twice, once in the morning and once in the evening around five. I just didnt want to cut back on the food straight away as everybody has told me to feed younbirds as much as they can eat, i didnt want to stop their growth.

hi north road racer, could you not let them out any sooner than 5 pm as i think this is your problem mate because you probably feed them after 6 pm, meaning they will probably still have some food in there crops in the morning mate,if you cant get them out any sooner i would feed them 1 and half ounce each, 20 birds =30 ounce.

1 1/2 oz per bird should be plenty
