Guest Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 I personally use builders lime in the water for 2 days,(fill up a plastic bucket with water the night before and put in 2 good splashes of lime powder) Never had YBs but if any look offy I use the above. Also get 1/2 heads or more of elderberries soak them and use in drinkers. Biggest hit of vit c on market and fantastic for respirotry, (p.m. for mix etc). Sambucus Nigra The medicene tree..........! All challenges on above welcome, but remember you CAN NOT beat nature, we are traveller family and still use some of the old recipes for health etc ourselvesi think allen you may have to put it on thread ,you may be over-run with pm s . andy.
Guest Owen Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 Some pigeons that get YBS are never any good again. Others who have a higher level of immunity will get over it, eventually. You can not cure YBS in my opinion but you can treat the side effect of it. The actual disease must run it's course. There are things you can do to help matters. Get them onto deep litter and feed a very light mix. No beans, peas or and other legumes. Those that hold food should not be fed at all until they clear their crops. And it is important not to let them out. In fact the best thing is to isolate them if you can. There are various medicines on the market, most of them work well. My choice would be amoxiciline. But make sure that you give it to them for at least ten days. I would not treat any bird that is not ill. Flock treatments will knock the lot of them off form completely. I am not entirely sure where the disease comes from, but a major factor is stress. I used to get it every year without fail. One year I had them falling off the perches in the night and a lot were ruined and I had to kill them. Since I changed my management, I have the same stock birds and their offspring, I don't get it any more. Occasionally I might get one go a bit quiet but they have a couple of off days and they are back on form again. I hope this helps.

blackdog Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 been told you should treat for canker after y.b.s, what does members think.
Guest Owen Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 No mate. It is much better to do what I have done. Manage the birds so that they don't get it the first place and get rid of any that do not measure up to what you want, for whatever reason. It is not live pigeons we want, or even healthy pigeons. We want birds that are in super health that allows them to generate form to win races. I certainly don't want anything else.

Guest Owen Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 In regard to the subject of canker and for that matter cocci. There is no doubt that the stress brought on by the illness does cause these diseases to fair up and become a problem. So I think you are right to say that they should be treated. You should also watch out for ornithosis because this is another disease that likes to exploit YBS to do it's evil job.

Guest strapper Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 i think everyone needs to know its not adeno virus that kills the birds..... its e coli.which will most probably be the secondary infection that kills them...treat for that!....forget all those that say dont treat and all that...they will be the 1st down the doctors getting medication for themselves . non treating these days can be irresponsible towards other members of the club your in....how many of these have their children immunised ??..isnt that the same .

Guest strapper Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 even doctors now wont give you anti biotics unless absolutely necesary why is this.. same reason you shouldnt treat bird willy nilly i agree not to treat willy nilly...responsible treating is whats required...blind treating isnt heling anything. i never treat unless i know for certain what the problem is then i dont over dose the birds with it. but if the doctor thought you needed antibiotice for e coli i know for certain the doctor would treat you with them.......i know...ive had it 3 times and it aint nice.

Guest strapper Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 ow much does that cost you everytime you get the birds tested h it costs £13...but it all depends if im having treatment from him as well...very resonable...price ...how much does it cost to blind treat?. knowing for sure is worth its weight in gold...better then worrying over what it maybe.
