Guest Denny Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 Read various ways to tell when not to toss the birds - but how do you judge what the wind speed is like? At the mo my area is having 32 km/ph and I can see the top of the trees being blown about a fair bit - is this too strong for ybs for a training toss? Is there a limit or a way you know when its too strong?
pjc Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 The problem with tossing yb's in windy conditions is that they get blown into wires etc where as old birds have the experience to dodge obsticles and have learnt how to handle the wind. A good gauge is to decide if you would let your birds out to excercise around home, if yes then they should be ok, but if not, risk of wires and aerials etc then leave at home.

Good sense.. I notice when I do toss the birds with a strong wind then they tend to fly a deal closer to the ground and there is this risk of injury. Although my birds do appear to handle the wind with ease - problems arise when trying to land on the loft. Also the younger birds have this exuberant attitude and crash into overhead cables from time to time. Doesn't happen very often. Obviously never ask them to fly with a cropfull of seed as ballast!
