Merlin Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 Age in Stock Birds still doing his duties and producing healthy youngsters is significant proof that its constitution is sound, something we should strive for when selecting pigeons is its constitution, basic good health, mine would be based on Old Sires and Young Dams, mostly related, and occasionally the opposite, and then only with a certain purpose in mind.
Guest slugmonkey Posted November 5, 2008 Report Posted November 5, 2008 First of all some of the best birds on the planet are 12+ years old Secondly you can always take an egg away to another pair ( or eggs ) Third is a 17 year old pigeon still breeding not a sign of vitality ? Take the best hen that was bred by this bird and breed her back take a good brother/sister pair and breed the offspring back breed 1/2 brother sister pairs together and breed back to old cock then breed these together and put back with old cock old cock and yearling hen is an awesome combonation BUT look at these inbreds as stock birds for the future when you cross these out they will be good producers if you take 2 very inbred birds from 2 diffrent lines and breed them as yearlings together 3 of 5 will be mediocre 2 will be good 1 will be great breed the great ones back to oldest bird from same line ON BOTH SIDES Highly inbred birds will not be your best racers but the crossed birds out of these wil be awesome

Guest Posted November 10, 2008 Report Posted November 10, 2008 Night Night and please in the mornin let me know your wisdom. Good night my friend. Sorry Freebird been away, death in the family. What I was saying I think!! Was a) Select birds with the best constitution Match the same types together, short to short distance. Long to long distance c) Match those that fly well in similar conditions together e.g. within those identified as sprinters put those that win on hard days together. The other thing I was saying is that sometimes you can have the finest pigeon that should win out of turn, he never does but you never lose him. With humans you get the real quality person who if motivated/nurtured correctly could be a great asset to society, but turns out to e someone who makes no constructive contribution to society more’s the worse the contribution can be destructive. And the cock I mentioned is for sale because he will never race for me! Though I do believe he will breed because wrong uns tend to be good at getting their leg over.
