Ian McKay Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 Does anyone use a 'Bull Box'? If so how do you find it? Interested in this method. Hi Geraint I have one and used it very successfully I had a wonderful cock on loan which had only produced two young the year before I got him he was 10yrs old I got the box for him and produced 23 eggs in less than three monthe hatching 19 of them the four lost was because of me and my mate the eggs were all full The hardest part is finding other birds to rear them you need a lot of time and patients I would advise anyone with a Super cock to try it It can be shocking the amount of young birds you can get off him You will need to keep good records of laid dates or you will get lost Will try and photograph the box and get my wife to post it later on Cheers Ian

Guest Owen Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 Geraint I use The Bull System. I find it works really well. This year I will use either three or four cocks as bulls. It does things that you could not do any other way. It allows you to try up to about ten hens with your best cocks. It tells you which hens produce good birds with the cocks. And it allows me to breed from Widow Hens without wasting my time taking YBs from untried stock. I do not use bull boxes. I use spare compartments and standard widowhood boxes for the pairs. Simplified, it works like this. Widowhood boxes are set up to contain a cock and hen with a dowelled partition between them. They pair to each other through the bars but they are not allowed to run together. The bull is placed into a section on his own. No contact with other birds, not even by sight. The hens are put in to the bull three times each day. After she has laid the second egg I withdraw the parting and the Widowhood Cock runs with his hen and acts as if he had sired the eggs. I have two sets of eight Widow Cocks, none will sire their own eggs. I also have two sets of six Stock Birds, none of which will sire their first rounds. The Bull Cocks, I use have all won at least four firsts. Since I started using this system, my losses have dropped and the birds race much better. I think it will take a little time but I am convinced that I will end up with a very strong gene pool. All my YBs will have at least one winning parent and in most cases two. I hope that helps let me know and I will tell you more about it, if you are interested. Owen
