does anyone know if by pairing up early birds keeps there form?

my problem is i always get my birds bounching for the first few races which i usually win then they drop off form, ibelieve this because ive trained & got em too fit in cold weather & they are too fit before racing hence fit & no race to send em to!!! what ideas & views do other members have on this subject

i want to pair my rounabout up in jan but only get the hens buzzing for the first few races then rest em & let the cocks then take over then get hens back to form for the longer land & channel races.

i also want to pair a later teem up in late feb for the channel races

also what are peoples views on yearlings for the first few races

most of your questions, youve more or less answered yourself.

one thing to remember is pigeons hate cold east winds

most of the strays found at my loft in cold april are iether late breds or  yearlings. isee them every year, these pigeons are finished for the year.   i used to start my yearlings middle of may   approx  [depending on the weather]   youll get the benefit from them then     your getting there speedbird     wish you all the best

p.s peds. will be in post next week    jimmy

Speedbird, I pair mine in jan, let them bring a round of YBS up. Then split them, Then a month b4 the first race repair them and let then sit for 5days (any longer and they will come into form and start dropping flights too early) so they are on widowhood for two weeks b4 the first race. While they are paired for the second time train them back to the hens.

Well i pair mine up in Jan,When the youngsters are about 22 to 24 days old i wean them over to the young bird loft,& the hens & cocks will sit for 7 days, then i take the hens away,& let the cocks sit a further 3 days. But then thay would of left the eggs ,& then i take away the nest pan eggs,& thay will then be  put on the widowhood system, ready for racing. The hens are put in the hen loft.I do not repair at all during racing, done this a few times & i fell that it make the widow cocks lazy.So i start training 2 weeks before the 1st race. With the cocks & hens splite, thay will get let out at seperate time of the day,& trained separate,So ya could say that the cocks after seperation will not see a hen, or visa versa, till about the 3 race into the season,So i send hopefully fit & healthy pigeons, racing back to the loft as to me the first few races are warm ups & the motavation will come in after that Hope it helps Speckled.

For the first two races as o/b's show the hens only when coming back from the race then dont show the hens after that unless they stop coming in decent time then show the hens before they go this should make them think, then show the hens after the race, but only to those that come in decent time.  Stragglers will not see their hens. Keep them guessing other wise the older birds will stop trying. with yearlings show the hens before and after the race for two or three races by then they should have picked up the system then treat them the same as the rest of your team. good luck.   :)

Show the hens during training. Then as I said show the hens to yearlings 2 or 3 time before and after a race but with older birds  let the cocks see their hens after the race for 10-15 mins. any stragglers do not get to see their hens If the cock birds look as though they are going off song. Then let them see the hen before racing it may make wake up and try harder, I dont like showing the hens too often as this tends to make more likly to pair to each other in their own section :)

what are members few on pairing leting em rearing 1yb then spliting em up then pepairing later would this help em keep there form? as i want to get ybs offf em & get them on the darkness

Hi Speedbird we pair up on Boxing day rear a round of y\bs, but when the cock stats to look at his hen again take one y\b and the hen and place some shavings and straw on the floor of the y\b loft. Put the hen and the y\b on the floor and once all the hens and one of their y\bs are in the loft you will be amased at the hens going about feeding any y\bs. Once the cocks have reared the other y\b move them into the loft. Give the cocks & hens a weeks rest then pair them all again this time you should have them down on eggs at the same time and a setteled loft. After sitting 7 days split them all at one time and they are ready for training. We train ours out to 20mls before we start to show the hens. When we train the cocks back to the hens we let the hens go 20min. before the cocks. next day the cocks go first. the only thing is you need someone at the loft to lock the birds lib. first in the boxes.

I think you have to find out why they have lost there form B4 that can be answered, mine lost there form this year due to the high humidity and they got a bit of respitory. Sometimes they pick things up in the basket. I would say if they go off form, keep em in and get the droppings tested to see what the problem is, if there is a problem treat em and try to find what the cause was. If there isnt a problem rest em for a week and let them have there hens (if there on widowhood) for a few days and let em out with the hen.

The above was for both really, but remember when the first few races start in april its still cold and a lot of people break them down, when really they need that bit extra. So if you keep an eye on the weather for the race if its gona be cold, give em a bit extra to eat. The better you treat them in them first few races the better they will keep later in the season. i.e. Dont sicken too early. If I see its gona be a head wind I give em 4 peanuts each in the early races. (DMG in the water will make em come faster, I guarantee that, if they are in good condition)
