speedbird Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 the other day a hawk swooped down & grabbed one of my stock birds!! but let go when i raced at with the brush & let go when i hit it. after checking yesterday found lots of feathers & what was left of one of my best stock birds dont think the hawk eaten it all as theres a few cats around which i dont mind as much as they keep the vermin down. i then went into another hut to see another bird gone!! probably a vitim if the dreaded hawk!! there has been lots of attack in my area this week alone another member told me to put up cd,s up on the fench around the loft as apperently from a distance look like owls which scars em. is this true or has anyone got any ideas. i no longer let the stock birds out due to this doesnt realy affect my racers as they exercise for 45 mins then straight in but dead worried when i start to let the yb out in a couple of months. open to ideas
mark Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 i used to use a bali bell fitted to the pigeons tail you to give off a high pitch whistle dont know if you can still get them.bt even next doors cat used to runaway when the birds were out flying. good luck mark
Cam Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 Hi Speedbird We have used Cds for some time now and yes it does work we drill a hole in them and hang them on wire around the loft/garden it works against sparrow hawks but not perigrine falcons of which we are plagued with and have been for some years.for them we use a starter pistol which scares them off when they are about to make their attack hope this helps. cam
schouwman71 Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 C.Ds or try and get dummy owls they work wonders.1994 a sparrow hawk stopped me flying my birds for the full season ,even my widowhood cocks were half an hour behind the winners in our club and when aproaching the loft would just gain hight and fly around before they finally dropped, a friend told me to get a dummy owl and the hawk changed its line of flight but the birds were just to scared to re start racing them.Good luck Matey
jimmy white Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 sypathy for you speedbird, but you can try all the posts above, but a starter pistol does put the hawk off, if your there, and fire it at the right time, good luck.
