i have a few pairs that i am forcing to bond.  they have been together since thanksgiving weekend and havent bonded yet.  these are all older birds 98-02.  and most have been paired before with other birds.  we are thinking about puting a light in to increase the day.  i know that the day length has a bit to due with breeding.  but i also know that domestic pigeons will breed all year long if given the chance.

any advise here would be appreciated.

sym . sometimes if new pairs are in earshot of their former mates and the hen can hear the call of her old partner she will refuse to pair ? isolation with her new mate for a few days sometimes does the trick , ( if this is the case ) add a bit of hemp seed to the feed helps to fire em up a bit ....ray

split them up and put the hens away where they can not see or hear the other birds then try them again in a few days :)

i was given a pair of janssens off a lady who has bred from these birds, a mealy cock & a brown hen,(2003 & 2004)  they are nowhere near as affectinate as any of my others, infact they was pecking each other at first when i put them together, now they dont peck just sit there, as soon as the hen has chance, she goes to another cock who is already paired up & tries to kiss & feed him, he is not interested in her & his hen drives her away, but the mealy cock is not interested in her or any other hen, he just goes on to other nestboxes & causes trouble with the other cocks, ive tried seperating for a day or two & still no joy?

any ideas?

thanks

Tough one, had a pair exactly same in 2004, went to Blackpool for this cock and my hen was just not interested in him. Ended up splitting them and giving the cock the choice of the remaining hens. Bad move. The hen he chose was taken by a hawk when their youngsters were 4 days old, and they ended up a pair of duffers, both 'gone' as yearlings...

If you have a spare end, maybe throw them in there and wait till nature takes it course? At least they won't be annoying the other paired pigeons.

its just that shes game, but he dont want to know at all! i was begining to think mr mealy was a hen too, but all the cocks drive him off so might leave them in peace on their own for a bit, or pair her up with one of the spare cocks so i can float some good  eggs under her, think i will.

thanks again

Try seperating them , put the cock in the hens loft and cage him with food and water put past mates away do the same withe hen put her in crate in cock loft and dont let any on her 3 days later put together if they dont mate 15-30 minutes put back in pens 2 days then try again

It  might also be weather birds know incoming fronts once I tried to put pair together all winter for a couple of stock birds when I turned birds out in spring she jumped lofts and were first eggs I got

it would be better if mr meally is a mrs mealy, it would even things out for you snowy, but if it is a cock and hen they will pair up eventualy.

but a seprerate wee tip if you get a boisterous cock knocking ten bells out the hen, whilst their locked in the box, is put a half brick in so that the hen can sit on it, as sometimes the hen can get fairly pecked, even scalped in some cases, best of luck anyway

One quirky thing I noticed with some cocks is that they don't seem to like the hen in the box till he calls her there. As Jimmy says things not going well poor hen takes a bashing... even on her brick. Put both of them in spare end, and they get on fine, cooried doon in a corner together oblivious to the rest of the world. Then let all the other pairs out singly. When last pair locked up, let cock go back to his box, he starts calling in back corner, she follows up to the box, hesitates for a mo, watching him in the corner, then literally jumps on him... usually end cooried doon in box corner together ... and earlier problem solved.

Different ideas for my own birds in 2006. Other than stock pairs, and one racing cock, intend let them pick their own mates. Most won't be rearing a youngster (before the racing starts) with one or two getting one floated under them for specific races.

ANOTHER ONE IVE GOT FOR YOU ALL :

I HAVE A LATE 2005 BRED COCK PAIRED UP OK APART HE DOES EVERYTHING BUT MATES HER!  :-/

COOS HER UP, CHASES HER, FEEDS HERKISS & CLEAN HER, EVEN CALLS HER TO THE NEST BOX & SHE COMES, they go all through the process of a mating, apart from tredding her??

BUT, ive watched(from a distance) all the other pairs including his nest mate, all have mated , ive even locked them all in their boxes for a couple of hours apart from this pair & the same happens again, goes through the process but no tredding her?

any ideas??

he is deffo a cock

personaly im not sure hard 2 tell in the light in the pic. black splashes cocks brown splashes hen how long have u had these birds in your loft snowy ? & did the lady who gave them 2 you have them flying out ? it might just be they are taking longer to settle in haveing lost there fredom . an avary on the stock section can help but  would warn if u get a lot of hawks near u this can lead 2 tears as a paniced pigeon can do itself fatal damage flying into the wires, my father lost his best ever breeding hen this way Tho in balance many say getting the sun on there backs when they can gives healthyer birds n healther youngsters

ps browsed your site b4 m8 nice birds id never heard of putmans before n asked the old man  n he hadnt heard of them for years he said. breed an extra pair for stock just in case i would nice 2 see ppl keeping the old rather than buying loads of the latest fashion birds all the best for 2006 n good luck with the mealy

if i have any problems with parings i either leave the cock or hen locked up in the box and which ever knows there box on the other side so they get to know each other

or

put them in the young bird loft with plenty of room & both at sometime familier with this loft
