stevebelbin Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 If it is cocci then you can treat with Appertex from harkers whilst they are rearing
Guest Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Wouldn't treat, or treat blind, when they are feeding youngsters. Don't always assume something is wrong. It could be a combination of OBs eating a lot of minerals and / or drinking a lot more water because they are feeding youngsters. Quite normal. and if you are feeding a mix with a lot of small seed and not much hard grain like beans or peas, then droppings will be loose. Again quite normal.
stevebelbin Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Yeh, sorry meant to mention that, best to get them tested first if you feel theres a prob. But using something like gemthepax on the corn will tighen the droppings, if theres not a major prob. Or a dose of probiotics
pigeonscout Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 It is hard to tell with droppings when feeding young birds I think Bruno gives a good answer. If they are not wet leave well alone. Change the feed to one that has lots of peas and no maze. How are the dropping from the young birds around the nest?
ACE LOFTS Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 there is a advert in this weeks rp on the first page droppings tested £12.50 THATS WHAT I WOULD DO
edthekid Posted January 29, 2007 Author Report Posted January 29, 2007 young birds are semi wet light green....there is plenty of maize in mix and birds seem to discard it.....will change corn ....also they do drink loads of water............cheers
Wiley Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 sounds like cocci or there not getting enought salts?/
snowy Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 my breeders rearing young-ens are also a bit squishy, they were last year for a bit at the same time when young-ens are about 7 days, also drinking quite a bit, all seem healthy though, so i will leave alone, give them garlic water for a day. but will keep a close eye on them. regards
Wiley Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 its strange its either cocci or your birds are intake far to much water for some reason!are the young birds droppings also wet??
Guest cloudview Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 try looking up , WET CANKER alsobirds could be getting to much salt
Guest Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 could be salmonella ,does it smell are there any bubbles in it ,if you have treated for this kind of complaint in the past then it could be a sign of rearing its ugly head again now that the pigeons are feeding young and under some stress.
edthekid Posted January 29, 2007 Author Report Posted January 29, 2007 they dont smell any differant and cant see bubbles ......also never treated for it.....i have a microscope but my misses has put the drivers disc someware safe and surprise cant find it so its safe alright
jimmy white Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 do the ybs in the nest look perfect and gaining weight perfect,, if not something wrong ,,would get droppings tested asap, then take avian vets advice.
Guest Posted January 29, 2007 Report Posted January 29, 2007 Might have come across something similar last year. Droppings that looked like wet mud. Thought the two youngsters in the nest bowl were passing sloppy droppings, but looking at the nest bowl the droppings along the rim were fine. Youngsters and their parents were fine too. Cleaned, dried and disinfected nest box next couple of days, keeping close eye on every bird in that box. Later discovered nest felt was soaked at the side nearest nest box entrance and this is where the muddy droppings had been.. came to conclusion parents were pumping youngsters full to bursting and throwing water everywhere. Water spilling onto droppings = muddy droppings. Sorted itself out a few days later.
