MsPigeon Posted January 13, 2006 Report Posted January 13, 2006 When I do all that basket training I also teach them to eat and drink from the crate. So when race season comes they know how to do it.
GREENGRASS Posted January 13, 2006 Report Posted January 13, 2006 my personal belief is that confidence is the key with young birds so long as they are in excellent health and fit from loft flying and ranging you can start at any distance(within reason). i start at 5 miles and only move on when they kit up real tight and clear straight away. i will do the same at 10 miles and 15 miles and then go to 30 miles until the first race which for us is approx 45 miles. i must add i always train on line of flight and any bad trappers go hungry but i find they are only bad trappers once. this year past was my best year ever with young birds and one thing i noticed above all else was that the young birds after leaving the loft climbed up into the clouds and then dissapeared for hours at a time but when they returned home they would kit up and swoop low over the loft a few times before trapping. i spend a lot of time getting the youngsters used to using the stall traps from an early age and find this helps on race days as wings said with young birds races can be lost on a bad trap. health, fitness, confidence and you wont go far wrong.
jimmy white Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 IF YOU CANNOT GET A DECENT SYSTEM FOR YBS OUT OF ALL THESE GEEAT POSTS, I WOULD BE TENDING TO HAVE A GOOD LOOK AT MY MANAGEMENT AND INDEED MYSELF, I MEAN THAT IN A GENUINE WAY AND NOT SMART IN ANY WAY.
Guest Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 Speight There's plenty of guys down here start 'em at 20 miles & get 'em ok. We just like to build their confidence a bit. When the youngsters are exercising/roaming for 2-3 hrs a day they're covering this ground anyway. Mike Mike They only train 20 miles or will train further than 20 miles?
Guest Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 I polled 22 miles Speight, and qualified that by saying that my birds had been ranging for weeks on end, with training beginning around 10 days before the first race i.e. mid July, when the youngsters are 5 months old and, I believe, have already covered their home territory. My next would be Newcraighall, 28 miles and then onto maximum, Longniddry or Drem railway stations, 35 and 40 miles respectively, then into 1st race Kelso, 57 miles. Ok thanks, Bruno... our first race at 58 miles for yb's.
Guest Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 58 MILES THATS FURTHER THAN OUR 3RD RACE :-/

westburylofts Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 120 Miles then 147 miles last race exeter 200 miles RAY
Guest Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 I think I might miss the first few YB races this year and wait until they are past the 100mile point, as it seems after the first few races you get fewer losses.
Guest Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 I wish our first races were over the channel, to give them the confidence later in life, mine have to go at least 350miles B4 they hit the channel. I have in the past trained them off the East coast at Whitby, which give them a bit of a sea view LOL, but sometimes had bad tosses, which I think was due to the hawks you get over the moors, so I stopped.
Guest slugmonkey Posted January 24, 2006 Report Posted January 24, 2006 We start our 1st race at 100 then 150 then 200 the 3rd week of the season there are several guys who start there birds in excess of 25 miles on there first toss
PC Posted January 25, 2006 Report Posted January 25, 2006 The first training ours get is teaching them to fly to the landing board from the lawn after weve moved them to the yb loft n then to go thru the bobs we did try some 2-3 mile starting tosses this year but the birds thought this was to short n went of for a 1 1/2 hour fly so we just went back to the ten mile mark we normal use about 2-3 tosses here then out 2 40 miles as soon as they start clearing fast from the training point. normaly put a few old hens in for first toss from each point
Guest Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 1st week - OLD BIRDS - when do you train them e.g 2 weeks before 1st race or 3 weeks before 1st race?
MsPigeon Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 we did try some 2-3 mile starting tosses this year but the birds thought this was to short n went of for a 1 1/2 hour fly PC sometimes it helps to let them loft fly before basketing to go down the road, kinda tires them out a bit.
jimmy white Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 WHERE WE STAY ,I WOULD WATCH TRAINING YBS IN AN EAST WINDS, AS YOU CAN GET MIST COMMING IN FROM THE COAST, VERY QUICKLY
