Guest CS Posted June 22, 2007 Report Posted June 22, 2007 When do you train your young birds and how far will you take them to ?
jimmy white Posted June 23, 2007 Report Posted June 23, 2007 when you say" training" i consider this differant from tossing ,or tossing is a part of their training , first of all at a very young age i would get them tame and then basket train them [i found that tamer yb,s are easier basket trained ,less stress etc] but fed and watered in basket many times , when they are ranging , i would let them do so, till about 3 weeks b4 racing starts , then start tossing them ,probably about 5 miles to begin with a few times fairly peckish ,then 10 ,20 a few times at the 20 mark ,then single them up [this takes the whole day do do it right ] but after a couple of single ups they clear far quicker and then becomes easier [you cant do that with 100 ybs ;D] so the less yb,s the more attention, and less losses. i would then stretch them to 50 miles and give them this every day for a week [weather permitting], then theyd be ready for the first race , where i would probably train them 3 times a week 25 miles or so and try and get some single or double ups
Guest Greig the doo Drysdale Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 I start basket training once they are weaned every toss the old birds get the young birds get basket training since the baskets are out then when they start ranging I i toss them once at 3 miles a few @ 5 mile 10 miles then 15 to 20 miles and before the first young bird race this year I will get them to the first race point onceI hope

Guest CS Posted July 2, 2007 Report Posted July 2, 2007 Always start at 10 miles, a few tosses @ 10 miles, a few tosses @ 16 miles, a few tosses @ 20 miles, 30 to 50 miles, if needed...
David Home Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 Always start at 10 miles, a few tosses @ 10 miles, a few tosses @ 16 miles, a few tosses @ 20 miles, 30 to 50 miles, if needed... Near enough the same as they way I used to do it CS. I would also' single up' as this builds confidence in the yb's. If you can have someone at the home end to make a note of the arrivals, this can provide valuable information as to which birds are on song so to speak.

The White Rapido Man Posted July 12, 2007 Report Posted July 12, 2007 As soon as my YB's are weaned off they get half an hour in the basket sat on a basket pointing towards the closed door of the loft......at this point they are hungry and after 30 mins I pick up each one and pass them through the stall trap by hand.....after a week they can start to fly out and will use the stall trap with ease.....after a couple of weeks of batching up and ranging....down the road they go.......5 mile s apart upto 25 miles...then to 50 & 70 ........

My dad always at home, waiting for my YBs to come home from training, and i take my ybs to train, myself...
