Starting the Natural Season

Looking ahead to next year's OB racing, wondered if members allowed all their Natural race team to rear a youngster before the racing begins or are some pairs specially set down to have their first youngster for a specific race?

We try and keep selected Hens away from feeding their first youngster until they are two/three years old.On the selected Race which is usually the SNFC we will slip a 4/5 day youngster four days before basketing which allows the bigger youngsters to pull off the milk quicker.

the older fanciers [recing natural] used to say pair up on valentines day [middle of feb] that would be the time that the yb,s would be reared b4 the first race , but remembering the birds will cast their first flight after sitting 10 or so days on second round , these birds would be too far up in the moult for the distance races i,e july, so for this reason i would pair these later i,e late march or even april ,where they could be sent to  the national races sitting approx 10 days , but for inland races would race birds paired at this time [14 feb ] then sent on their fav nesting condition ,,, but above all the birds should be fit and  want to fly ,carry the right weight etc , pigeons tend to get in to a habit,, its up to the manager to make sure they are good habits , i,e flying round the loft for example ,if they wont do it ,,make them , theyll soon get into the habit [early morning is the best for this ] as my old freind david parkinson used to say,,,races are won at home :)  yb,s will thrive on plenty tossing, but ob,s get crafty to this and if tossed to early in the seson will weaken b4 the last races,, but as they say ,,theres many ways to skin a cat  :)
