jimmy white Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 i often hear the talk of ,,how have my pigeons got cocci, how have my pigeons got canker , how do they have worms etc, my loft is cleaned twice a day and is dry and air??? i feel a lot of fanciers forget about the outside of their lofts , many of which are a haven for all these things, so while your keeping your loft clean ,, why not go round the outside with a watering can and give it a good dousing with virkon s or the likes , i get a half gall of disenfectant from the horsey shop , for sweeping down the horses yard etc ,,,,birds will allways pick here and there , but at least it helps cut down any nasties outside the front of the loft
jimmy white Posted March 5, 2008 Author Report Posted March 5, 2008 i wonder how many will carry on making the same mistake year after year , in training birds far to early in cold east winds , a few trainers in these and the birds are finished for the season then we have the darkness system , this system must be adhered to properly, none of this forgetting to put the blinds down that night , then left later another night, this system has to be done right or not at all, as it will just upset the birds moult ,,,just my opinion and observation of some fanciers
Castleview Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 I'd say one of the most important things in a pigeon loft is ventilation. If their is air flowing through the loft you're less likely to develop respiratory problems. My loft is facing South-East exactly and being on a hill in Dudley the air flow will be beautiful through the back of the loft. (When I got my louvers in)
Guest IB Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 I recently saw 'draught excluder' wire mesh on a Pigeon DVD, Henk De Weerd recommends it? Strange looking stuff, a square mesh but instead of narrow guage wire the ups & downs are more like a thick web, with tiny holes between the web? Demonstrated it with a candle, wind blowing against 'web' outside, candle flame unaffected inside. Anybody know what this is and is it available in the UK?
suttonflyer Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 Petron advertise a product called CONTRATEX DEFLECTIVE NETTING. They say it lets in air without draughts, deflects rain, keeps out vermin, lets sunlight in. cost £19.00 1000mm x 2000mm.

Yes, this is it judging by the advert - candle flame present. ;D Now think the 'webbing' thing might have been a diagram demonstrating the molecular structure. http://www.nicodeheus.com/engels/contratex.html
Guest Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 This is like the stuff they use on scaffolding

Guest IB Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 Next question. ;D Is this the same stuff that pigeon transporter curtains are made of? Is it all the same trade name? Seems to be a webbing right enough? http://www.pigeonracing.co.uk/shop/popup_image.php?pID=482&image=0&osCsid=93695deca89a4089f46f27e34e7d9543
