Guest MBpigeonguy Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 i have a grizzle cock, and a blue bar hen, who have been mated up since early march, and they have a box and they kiss, but why dont they lay eggs? last week i put them in a saparate loft, with one box, hoping they will lay, but all they do is sit in the nest together all day, Why? were are the eggs? and the blue bar is a hen for shure,
Guest IB Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 There's usually no reason for it, other than maybe one is a latebred and not yet fully sexually matured? My latebreds seem to run a month later than the others. Have a curious pair myself. They were paired on 21st Feb and still haven't laid. The one I thought a hen has turned out a cock, and the one I thought was a cock, turned out a hen. I've floated a pair of eggs under them to foster which they've taken to, and hopefully that will trigger the cycle.
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted April 15, 2008 Report Posted April 15, 2008 so, i could give my pair two fertile eggs? and they will hatch them? but that would not work, as they will not have mile for the chicks, :'(
Guest IB Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 so, i could give my pair two fertile eggs? and they will hatch them? but that would not work, as they will not have mile for the chicks, :'( The crop milk is sparked by the birds sitting on eggs. Start by putting pot eggs under them to make sure they take to sitting; after you see both cock and hen take turns to sit, float the real eggs under them. As long as the real eggs are no older than say 5 days old, the birds will have plenty time to develop milk by the time they are due to hatch.
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 good news. the hen layed her first egg today! so all is good, it seemed to work putting them in a saparate loft alone, \but i will keep in mind what you told me IB
