now we are pretty near to the distance races have members any fads or fancies i,e w,hood ,,,natural,,,feeding ,,training etc.

i would say in my experience a well bred 2 year old for 5 to 550 miles and 3y,o upward for the 600+miles  i  have been luckier with w,hood up to 600 miles + but note there are still more natural birds scoring  sitting on eggs 10 days, my veiw would be three or four races ,with possibly the last race doing 8 hours on the wing if poss.approx 3 weeks b4 the big one , then after recovery a few decent longer tosses approx 100 miles [on good days] gradually increasing the protein nearing the race, and if poss manage the bird so that its just dropped its first or second flight, with the next flight just bursting through,,,,,any veiws on this :)

Couldnt find too much amisss with what you state yourself Jim,its all down to fine tuning, but if I had a choice as regards participant in a difficult 500 miler plus I would choose a hen, they appear to possess more determination, durability,a sheer dogedness,in most cases than Cocks, with an increase in Barley and Peanuts content,as these are two feeds, very easialy digested, with proper requirements for the job, again just my way.

yes i agree with both of these past two posts , maybe apart from the barley and pea nuts, i find peanuts excellent ,for putting on that little extra body needed for a long journey , but have found , merlin, that when feeding peanuts , they wont eat the barley , they obviously love the pea nuts , i find they get crafty, and stubborn and will wait on the peanuts :) :)

and lennut , i agree with your points [i think their more imortant than folks think, the bird has to love you ,,again the 3 c,s ,,,,,,,condition, contentment and control :) [sir colin must have loved me ;  :K) :K) :K) i loved him ;D after he won five  grand ;D ;D ;D,being the first bird into scotland, flying over 600 miles [2cnd national]  but to be honest money doesnt interest  me nowadays it just causes trouble :-/ :-/

one question i would like to ask , what do the member think of sending a hen with a newly hatched chick, say 500 miles + [i,e, crop milk] i have heard a lot of fanciers against this , but i often wonder if the bird can call on this crop milk as reserves, for the distance  :-/ :-/ :-/

I've had to shelve my planned nest condition of a 7 day old youngster at basketing, it needed the birds split for 2-3 weeks and re-paired. The 1st pair rose naturally, I split them and then all hell let loose, cock was battering the section down for his hen, and hen was battering her section down for the cock. So I put them back together and didn't even try seperating the other 2 pairs.

I'll need to do a lot of floating to give 2 pairs the latest hatch possible, and they'll now go feeding a big youngster, rather than a small one, though it will still their first hatch this year. The 3rd pair I dropped the hen last week - unbelievable  ??) - but I've another hen for the cock so he'll be nearer the 7 days youngster, making 3 candidates, rather than 4.

Sh*t happens, as they say.  ;D  But still on track, and getting there.  ;)

Jimmy no doubt you are correct to a certain extent,my mentor in pigeons now sadly departed told me many years ago,one of his many never forgotten bits of advice to  mewas,"You have got to fool pigeons a lot of the time, otherwise they will fool you"and as i meandered along with my pigeons life for many years now, never have I heard words  so prophetic as those, another one regarding pedigrees, showing him a bird I had bought, with the first ever pedigree I had ever seen,"Whats this" he said on being handed the pedigree "Go back and get the pedigree of the man who sold you that bird, thats what you should have got"
