Hi,

One of my club mates has gifted me a Benzing Quartz Modell clock, brown case.

Just wondering if anyone can give me some tips on checking this over.  In particular, the case is wired together with a RPRA seal, can I take take the seal off, or is that for the club officials to do, as it looks as though the clock winds from the dial and I was going to try it on time keeping.

Also the key that turns on the top, I am guessing this is used to stamp the thimbles after clocking in??

You can break the case seal and run the clock throughout the winter months but bear in mind all clocks need to be 3-way tested by your clubs clock committee prior to being used when racing, Do not make any adjustments to gain/loss indicator unless it is running to fast or slow over a 24 hour period then only just tweak it + or - a fraction at a time. It needs to be run on three faces, upright, face down and on end for 24 hours in all three directions before you make these adjustments.

If its the quartz model its battery powered not a wind up you need to open up the clock and check the batteries, theres a battery indicator button inside just press it and the green light will come on if the batteries are ok I change the batteries every season and only use good quality ones such as duracell other thing to check is the quality of the printout as it might need a new ink ribbon for the three way test other than that they are good reliable clocks

If it's a quartze clock the key is just used to time the bird in and adjust the time after it has been stopped, because it is quartze there is no winding. My advice would be to go see your local clock man and he will show you what to do.

Make sure you stop the clock, by top right hand side of clock, slide this lever forward but make sure it not between 5 secs before the min and 5 sec after as it could stop in the wrong place. Then you alter the min hand with your finger but move the Hour hand by inserting the key in to the square on the front. Make sure the drum is fitted correctly, and the lid wont open if key isn't fully turned to the end.

you would be better of taking it to the clock setter at your club than playing with it yourself if you no nothing about them he will have to 3 way test it as you have opened the seal from when it was set before ;) ;)
