cheeseman Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 hi george, ive had this before its the cocks that ive found that pinch the straw from other nests, so i just put more straw on the bottom, and these birds seem to perform better on race days.
George UK Posted April 25, 2009 Author Report Posted April 25, 2009 hi cheeseman i always keep my eyes on the birds when they hatching out had a few over the years with stretched out legs its sutch a shame to dispose of them i have learned a lot over the years am still learning Doade pm me with your number i will phone you tommorow cheers mate )
cheeseman Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 ive used dandy nests and also belgian plastic nest pans in the past, but now only use clay nest pans, and the only time i had a problem was when i used the plastic pans, dont now why maybe some one else has had the same problem
George UK Posted April 26, 2009 Author Report Posted April 26, 2009 when i had a problem with birds kicking ess out of the nest i used hyacinth bowl then transfer to normal nest bowl
George UK Posted April 26, 2009 Author Report Posted April 26, 2009 i think plastic is shiny and slippy i may be wrong never used them
Guest peter.j Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 i use plastic dog bowls with no ill effects the problem could come from the straw itself being to light and as the birds are entering/leaving the nest its being blown/carried out........pete
pjc Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 you'd be better of using a nest felt then the straw, a lot will either kick the straw out or just not bother building much of a nest so with a felt the young will keep warm and can't slip around on the empty clay bowl.
VAGIN Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 I have used tobbaco straws for a few years I let the birds pick it off the floor and build there own nests . I have never had any problems or lost any y/b in the nest
Guest Owen Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 I am with VAGIN. I use nest felts(not the black ones) and tabacco stalks. I scatter the stalks about the floor and the birds build their own nests. I have never had splay legs. I would be curious to know how much, and what sort of minerals you use. I use liquid calcium, two grits, powdered mineral, black and pink, vitaminised mineral from Natural and clay blocks ad lib. Everything is changed after two days because I don't want it to get dirty. This probably sounds like I am going over the top, but I am convinced that the birds need the minerals and they know what they want better than me. It seems to work, especially with the breeders and the YBs. In the past I have had egg binding and lost hens through it. Since I took a serious interest in the minerals I have not had any problems with hens laying. No soreness or stiffness, nothing. My YBs are much better and I am sure that the ones on darkness moult out better.
