IM NOT AVIN THAT FIFER OR THAT OIL OF ULEY REALLY WORKS.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted March 24, 2007 Report Posted March 24, 2007 My auntie keeps fantails, she lives in Aberdeen and when I was 14 I went to visit her. That was enough to get me hooked on them. When I got home from Aberdeen I convinced my Dad to help me build a shed to put some a few birds in, it was only 5ft x 4ft and housed a couple fantails that I got locally. They were a lot of fun then, but reading books on them got me thinking about racing, so I went to the local club, where there was an empty loft that I was allowed to put a few birds in. A few weeks later there was a lad packing in and I purchased his loft. It was 40ft x 10ft, with an established team of birds. It was a lot of hard work then and took a lot of delivering papers to pay for there feed and racing etc. I scored well in a few races and in my first channel race from bourges I ended up second with an old (he was 8 year old) blue cock, he was the best handling pigeon Ive ever handled. I kept them in that loft until I was 17, when I discovered alcolhol and the other type of bird, LOL. I packed in and forgot about the birds very quickly. I then met my current girl-friend when I was 19, and we are still together now, that was 8 years ago. But the night I met her she told me her name, and I recognised the surname straight away, and she told me her uncle was a pigeon fancier. Within a year I was back down the allotments watching the races. A lad down the garden asked me if I would look after the birds for 2 weeks while he was on holiday, and up until last year I was still there with him racing as a silent partner. The moral of my story is once you hooked, you will be back in the sport at some time in your life. Pigeons are like magnets to me, where ever I am, I am drawn towards them, be it in the town, on holiday etc etc. i AM THE SAME MATE WHERE EVER I AM IF THERE A BIRD THAT HAS A RING IM ON IT I WAS IN THE CANEY ISLAND A FEW YERS BACK AND I WAS IN HEAVEN,LOL EVERY WHERE I LOOKED THERE WAS BIRDS WITH RINGS ON EVEN SORE A FEW LOFTS OUT THERE
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 i had wild pigeons every year since i was 7 but i got racers at 16
Pigeonpa Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 my brother got me started when he gave me a pair of baby streeters to hand rear when i was eight. have them ever since and will be thirty five soon!
Guest The main Mahon Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 I started at about 10 years old with street pigeons caught in the old Bradford mills and Bradford city centre. I was then gifted a beautiful Janssen Blue pied Racer from a local fancier. It was twice the size of my streeters and was a beautiful pigeon. I lost it the first time I let it out and I was gutted, but I was also hooked. I eventually got a 6' x 6' loft when I was a teenager and flew an old bird and a young bird season in the Bradford Solus Invitation Flying Club. I managed to get a first and a fourth place in this season and I got a fantastic buzz from winning these cards, I've still got them today. I then gave pigeons up when I discovered a different kind of birds . I have just returned to keeping pigeons again last year with latebreds and have just bred my first round of babies. I can't wait to race the babies this coming young bird season.

jimmy white Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 very interesting poll,,,,,, sadly was told today that a young fancier 11 years old refused membership to a local pigeon club [that received a community grant ] to my mind this is outragious,,,,,,,,,,,,all because his dad new me ,,,sad ,,very sad ,allmost sick [he was going to keep them in an 8 by 6 loft at his grandads ] lives 6 miles from me :-/ :-/ :-/ :'(
Lennut Tar Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 very interesting poll,,,,,, sadly was told today that a young fancier 11 years old refused membership to a local pigeon club [that received a community grant ] to my mind this is outragious,,,,,,,,,,,,all because his dad new me ,,,sad ,,very sad ,allmost sick [he was going to keep them in an 8 by 6 loft at his grandads ] lives 6 miles from me :-/ :-/ :-/ :'( You really do wonder some times!!!!!!!, about the mentality of certain pigeon flyers etc & the decisions they make, when you read things like this, it's quite . & one does wonder at times if this great sport has a future. I was 9 years old in 1956, when I first had pigeons, "Just another novice" & have had them since then.(Except for 2 years paid holiday, by the government ;D ;D ;D in my early twenty's etc) & We had 30 odd members in our local junior club. Today you would be lucky, if you found that many in the whole state here (Size of England). One can only laugh ;D ;D ;D but it is rather in another way when one thinks of the future. Enjoy.

Quite sad some pigeon blokes patheic really should be encouraging new starters as a novice in my mid twentys I can honestly say this is the worst sport I've ever come across to get involved in you get no encouragement at all. Had a lot more help and advice from fanciers outside the club. I honestly think some pigeonmen have no idea of sportsmanship its a lot more fun when you are having to fly against good flyers as its gives you more satsification when you do manage to beat them. Also prevents you becoming cocky if you are a good flyer and thinking theres noone to beat and you just have to basket them. Shocking through young lads like that should be given all the help members can provide
DOVEScot Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 At the age of ten, they shared a hut with our chickens
THE FIFER Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 first had pigeons at the age of 13, we had a boys racing club, and our birds went with the local club, we had no clocks so had to run with the bird to a place if you got one in, some of the boys that were in this boys club are still members of the local club 2 day,
Guest casbri Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 helped my father out at age9 ..i took pigeons to station for training from duffield he gave me money for birds i always made sixpence as i used to put foot under wewheing scales ...good old days....
THE PRIEST Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 I voted before 12 as i was given pigeons for my 12th birthday from my dad but i had been helping him with pigeons since i was about 6. Even helped in the basket shed on a race night when i was about 8. They had me marking how many birds into each basket untill they trusted me to handel and ring the birds. michael.

jimmy white Posted January 12, 2008 Author Report Posted January 12, 2008 :) :)according to the poll, its obvious that if youve kept pigons as a boy or girl , theres more chance of you keeping them later in life. but on reflection, , i think we must attract all ages, even the" golden oldies" my motto has allways been, if each fancier, spent time in getting one of their freinds interested ,membership would double [easier said than done, but would say ive managed it on a few occasions] only thing is , theve never forgiven me for it, :) :) i do try and have done for allmost 60 years , ive helped many young fanciers on this forum [they in turn have helped me] this is the way it should be
