1.How do you got involved in the sport a brief history about themselves

I got involved in pigeons in 1994 when a fancier moved into the house next door to my mum and dad. i help him from day 1 to build his loft and helped him in every way I could. He gave up the sport and I bought his house off him with the two huts so I got pigeons from an old guy who is dead now (god bless him) who was giving up due to ill health.

2.What origins of stock/bloodlines do you keep?

I have a bit of everything in my loft just now because the birds I took over where all mixed. Bought a few jan aardens and beuchaerts in van reets.

3.When do you pair up?

I pair up the end of December normaly but this year i hung off till the end of january

(U will raed why in a minute)

4.What products and feed you use?

I feed all my birds a mixture of buckstons widowhood widowhood red and widowhood super all mixed togeather. I also give peanuts when i remember. I leave black and read minerals mixed in the loft all the time pick pots and started useing crumbling blocks also now and again I give them linseed and oyster shell now and then also.

5.What methods do you used to fly old birds should include feed and watering system?

I leave my old birds to pair up to who they want and fly natural. I train them from the hills which are 15 miles flying to me mon tues wed thurs untill the fed training starts then they get 2 tosses a week on tuesday and wednesday about 50 miles each day and then they get the open bowl every day from 0800hrs till about 2100hrs except a Saturday. I feed once a day about 1 1/2 oz per pigeon  its a big Rice pudding tin i use per 15 birds. I give clean water Friday and saturday. The rest of the week i use aviform ultimate 7 in 1.

6.What motivation techniques do you use?

All i use for treatment is paramixovirus before the racing starts and 7 in 1 unless they have somthing wrong with them then I will treat.

7.There health programmes, When and How often do you treat?

I would like to intrduce a full team of jan aarden and beuchaerts and maybe cross bread them or leave them to there own kind.

8.If you were to introduce new blood into the loft how would you go about it?

Last year racing was my first year racing myself which with the old birds I had no luck what so ever as the birds were all broken. I paired up december and had a team of 50 young birds which I won every race except the second I was 4th which was 74 miles. This year I have won 4 out of 6 with the old birds and been on the fed sheet every week apart from 1 so another realy good season so far.

9.Who would you go to to get the new blood?

My dream would be to the Scottish Nation Flying Club from France then go on to get a gold award

10.

I fly in Pumpherston and District pigeon club which has 6 members and is in the Central Scotland Federation.

1. How you got involved in the sport?

I first became fascinated in pigeons at about 7 years old through my father Jack Fletcher, Frank Faulkner and the late Ernie Salt. I won my first prize cards in 1964 at the Short Heath Flying Club, I flew in partnership with my father and raced successfully into the mid 1970’s as J. Fletcher and Son, in those days the pigeons were of the old Putman origin, in 1976 I got married, I now have 4 children and 2 grand-daughters, I returned to the sport with my in own loft in around 1982. My main interest within the sport has always leaned towards the breeding side of it and the development of my own birds.

2. What origins of stock and bloodlines do you keep?

The origins of my pigeons today trace back to two past Belgium masters, Theo Guilbert of Zulte and Frans Stoces of Winterslag. The Guilbert pigeons are mostly dark cheqs incorporating lines of Voets of Kessel, Slaets of Lint and Jean Swannet etc. ie Zwart Panter B.6271476, 85 Donkere Witpen Panter, Rapido etc. The Guilbert pigeons are very streamlined with soft muscles, lush feathering and superb eye quality.

The Stoces are very powerful blues and develop very quickly, most of the lines are through Voets and based around B.5226603, 76 ‘Fenomenen’ and B.5211648,75 ‘The Crack’ these direct Stoces from his ‘66’ Stappearts and Huyskens Van Riel. These birds are very strong and difficult to handle. The eye, feathering and muscle quality of the Stoces is stunning, working with these two families and watching them develop whilst in-building all the qualities I look for in pigeons ie eye sign, feather quality, wing structure, breathing rhythms, muscle volume, temperament, character and of course the main component - natural homing ability. All this has given me an insight or sort of window into the past and allowed me a glimpse of the type of birds that Stoces and Guilbert had to work with, these two families can be found at the base of many of todays champions such as Desmet Mathyjs, Vercammen, Houben, Van Elsasker, Buscheart, Wildermerch etc.

3. When do you pair your birds?

Our birds are paired around 7th February. For stock purposes most of my best breeders have been weaned around the summer solstice, young pigeons from these summer pairings seem more stable and true to type.

4. What products do you feed and use?

At the moment my birds are fed all year round on De schemaeker breeding or moulting with a mixed canary and hormoform supplement. Through the water I use a variety of herbs, rue, stinging nettles, wormwood etc. and Epsom salts once a week, very little else except chopped greens are given.

5. What methods (systems) do you use to fly your birds?

Due to working long hours 6.30am to 6.30pm for the past 10 years very little racing has been done, the birds are regularly road tested for me through some excellent fanciers, local and around the U.K., as both of my families are now beginning to look more like the finished article, Next year 2 sets of youngsters for the Guilbert and Stoces pigeons will be flown out and trained up to 80 miles privately to see how they work against each other.

6. What motivation techniques do you use?

As from 14 days old (still in the bowl) my youngsters are taught to defend their territory and box, they are allowed to stay and observe their parents doing much the same. A lot of this is done by play fighting with them as squeakers and as from next year a ‘corridor cock’ will be installed to make them more watchful and defensive, this trait will stay with them throughout their lives and as widowers they will not see hens (only the ‘corridor cock’) and if they are late he will be in their box, they will learn to hate him so it does not leave much to the imagination as to who will be in their box on a Friday evening? These cocks must defend their box to the death or they will be ‘taken out’ so to speak. As young birds next year they will be flown out on a natural system and allowed to develop properly, young cocks will be taught the box as previously stated, some of the young hens will be flown to the nest condition for a bit of sport as I believe in making youngsters not breaking them.

7. Health programmes, when and how often do you treat?

My pigeons have a strong natural immunity, I don’t believe in the un-necessary use of anti-biotics and medicines, unfortunately when racing commences the company they will be keeping may not be 100% so Gamba tabs will be on hand as a preventitive for cocci and canker and Nystatin at the ready in the case of Y.B.S. (crop ulcers).

8. If you were to introduce new blood into your loft, how would you go about it?

I have recently bought in a Louis Wouters based cock to take a look at, and a dark cock from Belgium, an out and out short distance bird, this one scares me a bit! His temperament is amazing, the pigeon would tread himself if he could, and every other pigeon in the loft (including his own youngsters in the nest) if allowed to. In the future I also plan to take a look at the pigeons of Louis Goyvearts but at the moment my focus is on the Guilberts and Stoces pigeons.

9. Your performances over the last 2/3 years

No racing has been done due to work and concentration on the development of my pigeons.

10. What is the size of your loft and team?

I only have a 16 ft breeding loft at the moment with about 16 pairs, but all this is about to change over the next few months.

11. What is your ambition and what would you like to see happen in the future?

I don’t have any further ambitions with my pigeons regards racing as I enjoy the breeding side too much, however I do want to see how my families act on the celibate/widowhood system. I would also like to have a go at one or two of these ‘one loft’ races and would like to see some form of development of real vitesse racing (short distance) up to about 60 miles max, same day marking as I prefer Derby’s to Nationals so to speak and I don’t think the French are going to tolerate the intrusion of our pigeons for very much longer and the obstacles are not going to go away.

12. What clubs do you belong to and which federation do you compete in?

I have recently joined Beeches Road Flying Club, a sound bunch of lads with excellent administration and H.Q. they compete in the Worcester Federation, I am also a member of the National Flying Club at the moment.

1.

How do you got involved in the sport a brief history about themselves

My dad raced for a couple of seasons when I was a kid but gave it up due to his work. Then 2001 he got offered some stock birds which he accepted and then he asked me if I wanted to race the birds again so we did.

2.

What origins of stock/bloodlines do you keep?

My distance team are mainly Eric Cannon blodlines with some kirkpatrick and southwell blood. My widowhood birds are mainly marcellis/Meuleman and van reets.

3.

When do you pair up?

I pair the widowers in February, my channel team in April and my stock team in december.

4.

What products and feed you use?

I use Gem's corn for all my birds which is gem widowhood for the widowhood team with superdiet on their return from racing. The distance team I feed our own mix called cranleigh no1 which gems mixes for us and it is made up of tic beans, peas, tares and maize.

I use strike, Gemthepax (best two products on the market in my opinion), Trikanox  and plenty of garlic and cider vinegar.

5.

What methods do you used to fly old birds should include feed and watering system?

For the channel I race a natural team but for some of the season I will part them to make them keener for the longer races.

For the shorter races I fly widowhood hens and cocks. All my birds are hopper fed so to speak, the widowers being fed as much as they want but in their boxes.

I don't break the birds down apart from a saturday when they get a super diet which is easier for them to digest after racing home. To this I also add G10 pellets.

6.

What motivation techniques do you use?

As anyone knows there is many ways to motivate widowers be it jealousy, showing the hens or just turning the bowl the main thing is to do something different every week to keep them on their toes.

The Naturals I don't really do alot to motivate them opting for contentment more but obviously I try to get them on their favoured nest condition for specific races.

7.

There health programmes, When and How often do you treat?

To be honest I don't treat for anything really as I opt for the more natural approach and have done since I started in 2001. The birds get strike on a sunday, cider vinegar a couple of times a week, garlic at least once a week and gemthepax on the corn.

I use trikanox every 6 weeks which is a gem product which helps to keep the trich count down. I can honestly say since I have followed this route regarding treatment I have not had problems with sickness at all in my loft. YBS doesn't cause me worries as Cider vinegar creates an enviroment in the crop where side infections cant live so even if YBS hit my loft it would be mild and be gone in about 10 days with no real problems. I don't treat for Cocci instead opting for a scrupulously clean and dry loft which are conditions that cocci can not live in. As for worms garlic takes care of that.

I also use cider vinegar in the bath so that takes care of lice aswell.

8.

If you were to introduce new blood into the loft how would you go about it?

If I was to start again I would go to one of the best fanciers at my chosen distance and try and buy a whole round of latebreds of his best, then I would breed from these and race them hard. I would not start with prisoner stock again as you collect a bit of this and abit of that it takes a while to eliminate what you don't want because "oh that cost me so much", or "so and so gave me that" where pedigrees are concerned you can be blinkered into thinking that bit of paper is the be all and end all.

9.

Who would you go to to get the new blood?

If I was concentrating on the distance I would approach the people who are regularly at the top of the sheet in the nationals year after year for which there are probably too many to mention.

People like John and Rose Wills, The Nicholsons, Jimmy Sheperd, Mark Gilbert, Jimmy Roy etc etc.

To be honest there are so many class acts in the british Isles I don't undertand why people go over to belgium each year to buy there birds we have far better here.

Frank Tasker, Alan darragh, Scott Gibson, Ron Williamson take your pick.

10.

How did you do performances over the last 2,3yr period?

Over tha last few years I have been highest prize winner in our club averaging about 6 or 7 1sts each season with plenty of classic and national positions. If you want to see my results or any other info including pictures check out my website at http://www.rowlylofts.co.uk.

This year I suppose my best team performance so far would be timing 3 out of 4 entries on the day from Pau in the LSECC to take 14th, 29th and 58th Open.

The following week I timed 5 of my 8 entries from the Tarbes National.

11.

What is your size of loft and size of team?

I have a 12 x 8 youngbird loft for about 45 - 50 youngsters.

18 x 8 natural loft for about 20 pairs plus a section for the widowhood hens. Then a 7 x 5 widowhood loft for 10 cocks.

Behind that I have a 10 x 12 ft stock loft with a 25ft aviary attached for 16 pairs of stock birds.

12. What is your dream to come true in the future?

Win the Pau National!

13.

Which club are u flying in?

Godalming DFC, National Flying Club, London and Southeast Classic club, BICC and the BBC.

Oh and Lion Brewery midweek club.

1.How do you got involved in the sport a brief history about themselves

i got involved with pigeons, when i was about 7 years of age...my brother and i would find them in barns in the country, and in town on the tall buildings..i have had pigeons since that time...i got into racing pigeons when i got out of the us. navy in 1967..

2.What origins of stock/bloodlines do you keep?

i keep a family of birds, i call "the blue demons", which is a combination of different old world strains, and some of the newer families of racing pigeons...the strains, are devriendt, delbar, fabry, bekaert, vandervelde, stichelbaut,

jan aarden, and three familes of janssen strain birds.....these birds are an inbred/line bred family...i also keep  some sprint strains, such as mulemans, houbens, staff van reets and vanloons..

3.When do you pair up?

this year, i paired up right after thanksgiving, because i needed to raise extra pigeons for 18  4-h junior member, in a club about 40 miles north of me...but usually i mate my birds up here in california, around the first of February of each year.

4.What products and feed you use?

for breeding i use a 17%  pigeon feed, which contains, popcorn, milo, wheat, maple peas, canadian peas, austrian peas, safflower, and rice.....my racing feed is a 15%

pigeon mix, containing whole hybrid corn, maple peas, austrian peas, trapper peas, safflower, flax, and black sunflower seeds....

5.What methods do you used to fly old birds should include feed and watering system?

i use the  double widowhood system during old bird races....i usually fly the cocks to 400 miles, and the hens from 400 to 600 miles, on this system.

6.What motivation techniques do you use?

i  worm the birds, and treat for cocci and canker a few weeks prior to the first race..

7.There health programmes, When and How often do you treat?

while racing, i give the birds, a good vitamin/mineral supplement, once per week, apple cider vinegar once per week,a good probiotic once per week, and garlic in the water once per week....each of these supplements helps to insure maximum health in the individual birds while they are competing..

8.If you were to introduce new blood into the loft how would you go about it?

i also use a feeding method, i call carbo loading for races up to 350 miles...(you can find info about this method on my hawkbait usa web site, under young bird feeding )at http://dennisweinreich.tripod.com/

9.Who would you go to to get the new blood?

when i introduce new blood into my family, i usually only bring in hens........from a winning family of pigeons..i always keep my sire side the same.......and to purchase a pigeon to cross into my family, i always go to a fancier that is winning in his or her area. and buy from there winningest flyers..

10.How did you do performances over the last 2,3yr period?

i havent flown my own birds the last 3 years because of throat cancer, but  have flown with another flyers birds at his loft, and have had great luck using my training and feeding methods...

11.What is your size of loft and size of team?

for old bird flying a team of 20 widowhood cocks and 20 widow hood hens is sufficient..my old bird flying loft is  about 6 ft by 12 ft.or 72 sq ft...i like to have 2 sq. ft per bird

12. What is your dream to come true in the future?

my future dream is to become a mentor to new young flyers, as well as winning a few races myself

1.How did you got involved in the sport a brief history about themselves

We fly as AJ Coils & Son - I got involved in the sport as an eight year old in 1989, when I started to go into my Grandads loft and look at his pigeons, and eventually joined the partnership a few years later and flew as E. Coils & Sons & Grandson, and in 2002 my cousin also joined to fly as E. Coils & Sons & Grandsons. But in 2004 me and my dad spent alot of money aquiring some new bloodlines, and decided to go it alone to fly as our current partnership.

2.What origins of stock/bloodlines do you keep?

We have Jos Soontjens from Frank Sheader, Staf Van Reets mainly from Ian Stafford, a few Flor Engels from Herman Beverdam and Frank Sheader and we also have most from a friend from Brugges in Belgiums (Jean Trosch) which are mainly FVW birds.

3.When do you pair up?

We usually pair up at the beginning of January

4.What products and feed you use?

We use the Versele Laga Super Widowhood PLX mixed with Beyers Turbo Red. Products used are Gemthepax, Gervit-W, Omniform & Energy from Oropharma.

5.What methods do you used to fly old birds should include feed and watering system?

We fly Widowhood Cocks and Cocks/Hens on Roundabout also, then pair these up for the channel. Widowhood Cocks get 1/2 oz AM and 1 oz PM - Roundabout the same until the channel, then it is left in front of them all day long.

6.What motivation techniques do you use?

Widowhood Cocks race back to their Box, where their hen is waiting for them in the bowl. And sometimes like to fire them up a bit more by putting another cock in the box with their hen.

7.There health programmes, When and How often do you treat?

Birds are treated for Canker, Cocci & Worms before the season starts, then whenever needed during the season.

8.If you were to introduce new blood into the loft how would you go about it?

I would look at fanciers winning well around my area, and see them. But others I would consider for different distances would be Sprint to Middle Distances - Ian Stafford, John Soderland, Donnely Bros, M&D Evans. Long Distances - Leadbitter & Sons, Ken Hine.

9.Who would you go to to get the new blood?

Answered in above

10.How did you do performances over the last 2,3yr period?

Didn’t race much over the past few years, as there was always problems in the loft. 1st Club 2nd Fed 7th Sec 2 Up North Combine 3948 Birds, 2nd Club 12th Fed, 2nd Club, 3rd Club 12th Fed, 4th Club 19th Fed, and a lot of 5th's & 6th's in Club as well.

11.What is your size of loft and size of team?

Widowhood Cocks loft is 36 x 8ft (4 sections) which has 36 cocks (9 per section) - Channel Loft is 12x8ft which houses 10 cocks and 10 hens - YB Loft is 16x8ft (2 sections) and houses about 60 YB's.

12. What is your dream to come true in the future?

To top the WDA or UNC, and to win the averages in the club and fed.

13.Which club are u flying in?

We fly in Sacriston HS, which is in Sacriston Fed (WDA) and Marquis of Granby HS, which is in Chester-le-Street Fed (UNC)

YEARS IN THE SPORT since 2002

DID ANY RELATIVES RACE PIGEONS ie father, grandfather etc.

My grandfather used to race, after he past away, my father raced further and now I’m doing it.

NAME OF CLUBS THAT YOU FLY IN:

Molse Fondclub

Tienverbond

Lommel

Vlugge Vlieger

Kempens Hafo Spel and next year probably in Limburg West.

All the above clubs are in the Province of  Antwerp

which is a part of  Zone C in the  national races

WHAT DISTANCES DO THES CLUBS SPECIALISE IN:

from 100-1000km

MOST FAMOUS FANCIERS IN THESE CLUBS:

Henri Menten, Vermeerbergen-Van Reet, Luyckx Raf, Gerard Rens, Tournier Edmond, Luis Verheyen, Arien-Verreckt, Guido Loockx, Serre Laport, etc … I counted once and there were over 20 national of provincial champions or winners in the clubs were i race.

YOUR BEST RESULTS IN THE LAST FEW YEARS:

This year I raced every week in the top 10 with the youngsters and especially on the national races they were superior !!! I had on the 6 provincial and nationals races for youngsters 6pigeons in the first 13 ace pigeons !!!!!! and I only basketed 12pigeons average. Also I’m the first ever in Antwerp to Beat Eric berjmoes (albert Marcelis) in the general provincial championship long distance Youth !!! In youngsters I beat him every time I entered the competition against him, but now I won the general champion of the Province of Antwerp ( Youth under 30 years ) and that’s a very special moment !!!!!

HOW MANY RACE BIRDS DO YOU HAVE:

for next year I’ve more than other season: 20widowers (6old 14yearlings) 8hens (yearlings) and I bought 50 youngsters from Arien-Verreckt and I’ll breed 50 of my own loft so I’ll have 100youngsters. I can breed only 1round of my own pigeons, so my 2nd round will go to my friends Sandra & Willy Vrancken (national champion 2004!!!) and also 40 to my best dutch friend, Gert-Jan Beute, known buy his janssens klak pigeons and his tremendous results !!!!

HOW MANY STOCK BIRDS DO YOU HAVE:

17 breeding couples, most not older than 3years old !!!!!!

WHAT BREEDS ARE THEY:

Theo Yskout x the old strain of my grandfather is my basic couple. Those I crossed with Rondags pigeons and that went superior also the houbens did very very wel. For next breedingseason I got some pigeons from: Gebr Herbots, Michel Van Lint, Again from Houben And for the rest I bred together with some top pigeons from top fanciers: like 1st nat argenton from marina vd velde, 1st nat bourges karlo van rompay, 3rd nat ace pigeons from Van Reet, Mol (also bred together with his best 2 hens) so we’ll see how these are going to do …

WHAT IS YOUR BEST BREEDER:

Difficult to say … because every year another one is better, but for sure if I have a good pigeon it has BETTINI blood in it … His father, Grandmother, nestsister, brothers etc all bred winners for me.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST RACER:

Tito and Agbar

HOW DO YOU SELECT YOUR BREEDERS  ie by results, pedigree, how they look, eyesign etc:

Because I’ve such young breeding loft I can’t select on results so 80% is selected by handling, especially eyes and wings are important for me …

WHO ARE THE BEST FLYERS IN YOUR AREA:

answered already above …

IF YOU COULD SELECT 1 LOFT IN EUROPE TO GET PIGEONS FROM WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Arien-Verreckt and I have 50 for next year … in my opinion they have the best pigeons in Belgium, because it’s a inbred strain, all the good pigeons descend from the same couple and a lot of fanciers win with there pigeons because they are easy to cross … I expect a lot of his pigeons !!!!

HOW DO YOU PREPARE PIGEONS FOR A RACE:

when they come home I use RE-FORCE and THUISKOMST from Rudi Hendrikx, so the sooner they recuparate the sooner you can build to the next flight. Through the week they get Condition Tonic and Prange Suppe and some Creatine sometimes. When I use medicines they are Linco Spectin, and ornithose mix from rudi hendrikx. Also 2times a year Endoprim against Paratyphoid (10days). For the rest I believe in nature. In mouliting a lot of thee etc …

WHAT FEED SYSTEM DO YOU USE FOR YOUR WIDOWERS AND YOUNG BIRDS:

every year I use the widowhood from Casaert (vanrobays company) but next year I’ll use MATADOR a german food … lett’s try out …

DO YOU MEDICATE AND HOW OFTEN:

2times against paratyphoid, and when necessary for the heads ( respiratory disease ) … but almost never for cancer …

DO YOU GIVE VITAMINS ETC AND WHAT BRANDS ARE THEY :

I use the schedule of Rudi Hendrikx (Duivensport Belgium) if somebody is interested I can send you his products by e-mail …( Contact National 1 regarding these products ).

HOW DO YOU PAIR YOUR BREEDERS ie  by pedigree, performance or how they handle:

last year I coupled bluexblue, darkxdark and it was my best season ever … but next year I’ll also do the color mating but also look at the eyes, darkeyes x white eyes etc …

WHO IS THE PIGEON FLYER IN BELGIUM THAT YOU MOST ADMIRE

Arien-Verreckt, because he works full time, has 2 very young children and wife and still can put up such huge results … I also have never met anybody that honest before

Name:

Rui Lobato I have 38 years old and I have a partnership called Avelar’s & Lobato.

Probably on the next year we will compete in two different Provinces because I will move to a new house, my partner still racing on the Lisbon Province and I will race on my new house on the Santarém Province. Visit our website to know more something about me www.avelar-lobato.loftgest.com and please sign my guestbook. Soon I will have the English version ready too.

Number of years racing

I have pigeon’s since I born because my father is a fancier too.

Did any relatives race pigeons ie: father, grandfather etcMy father begins on the pigeon sport in 1958 but others members of my family already had pigeon’s and some of them, still competing.

Do your family take an active interest in racing

Yes, my wife loves the pigeon’s. My parents, my brother, some uncles, some cousins, are interested on the pigeon’s sport.

Names of clubs you race in

In that moment I race in two different clubs on the Grupo Columbófilo do Sobralinho and Grupo Columbófilo Vialonga.

Number of fanciers in these clubs

Around 50 members each club.

Number of Stock pairs housed

Around 60 pairs.

What are the bloodlines of your breedersWe have our own bloodlines: Belgas do Xico, Picassos Janssen, Barcelonas e Cagalánissos and the imported bloodlines: Marcel Sangers, Dirk van Dijk, Flor Engels, Gaby Vandenabeele, Janssen, Arien-Verreckt, Leo Broeckx-Van Hees, Heremans-Ceusters, Louis Van Loon, Jef & Ulrich Lemmens and Ferry van Loo.

Do you inbreed or pair unrelated pigeons for :- Racing

                                                                            Breeding

I only make inbreed pairs to breed future breeders.

Do you introduce new breeders and how often

Yes, I introduce new breeders and I buy them during my trips to Belgium and Holland.

What selection do you use for the pigeons that you introduce ie: Performance, handling, bloodlines etc

I only buy pigeons to my breeding loft out of top winning bloodlines. During my trips I only visit top lofts and after handle

How do you pair your breeders ie pedigree, performance, inbreeding, handling ?To pair my breeders, I study their pedigrees and I like to see their eyes, kind of winds and kind of body because on my opinion, when we make one breeding pair we must search the perfection.

Do you buy from the famous fanciers or from fanciers that you believe have better birds

When I buy birds during my trips to Holland and Belgium, I only visit top lofts and I choose the kind of pigeon’s that in my opinion, are the best ones to introduce on my breeding loft but all of them must be full brothers or sons of top family racers. Usually I ask to show me some top racers and breeders and than I ask to show

How many rounds of youngsters do you breed from your best pairs

Usually I breed three or four rounds of my best pairs.

Do you pair your best breeders to more than 1 partner each year

Yes, only the new breeders to search the best combinations. Usually when I find a top pair, I keep them several year if all the years they breed top racers.

How many youngsters do you breed from your best breeder

The youngsters quantity depends if I couple the top cock with one or two hens. If I couple him only with one hen, I breed around four rounds of youngsters but if I pair him with two hens, I breed three youngsters’ rounds from each hen.

Do you medicate before pairing

Yes, I like to give a little treatment to the cancer and I like to give one pro-biotic. Usually I administrate one of this two pro-biotic: Strike or Improver.

Do you give your breeders any vitamins etc whilst breeding

I use breeding vitamins to all my breeders and I like to give some supplements too.

How many old birds do you race

70

How many Young birds do you race

In Portugal we only begin to race with Yearlings because with our kind of weather (hot) we only can race until the end of June. So, we cannot make youngsters races in August or September like in Belgium or Holland because we have high temperatures.

Do you race both old hens and cocks or cocks only

Everybody in Portugal race with hens and cocks, the same happens in that moment in Belgium and Holland.

Do you medicate before racing

Yes

What distances do you race from

200 km until 800 km.

How many races a year do you old birds have

This year we had 18 races but on the years we had 21 races by season.

How many races do your young birds have and do you race them each week

In Portugal we don’t have youngsters races because the weather is too hot in July, August and September.

For how long do your young and old birds train for each day

Between 45 – 70 minutes by day.

Do you give supplements whilst racing

Yes, I use.

Give some brief details of your feeding methods for young and old birds

My racers eat two times by day, on the early morning and on the afternoon. The cocks eat one and half soap spoon of food by meal and the hens eat one soap spoon by meal but all the days I handle several racers and see their weight and if I see that they need more quantity of food, I give them. Depending the distance and kind of the race, on the last meals I can let the racers eat until they left corn on the boxes.

When do you retire a racer and is it based on results only or selection

I only put top racers on my breeding loft if I see on him conditions and quality to be a top breeder.

What is your proudest moment so far in the pigeon sport

Fortunately I have several of them because I already win many tittles on the pigeon’s sport but I’m proud to have friends on this sport all over the world.

If you could obtain pigeon from one loft who would it be and why

I already have the pigeon’s that I want on my breeding loft but I’m always searching for better pigeon’s!

If possible can we put some photo’s of your best pigeons in the article

Do you feed the same all week or use the light/heavy system? Brief details??

Depending the kind of the race I use light and heavy system but I use to some kind of corn mixtures that are on the middle of both system, like the “Gerry-Plus” from versele-Laga.

When buying pigeons do you buy from a proven pairing or would you buy a nice handler from unproven lines, or based on strain names only. When I go to Belgium and Holland, I only buy brothers/sisters or sons/daughters of top national racers but they must belong to strong and winning families which wins top results in several lofts. Before buy the birds, I study their bloodlines and results and usually I ask advice to some Belgium and Dutch friends of me. After that I visit several top lofts and I handle their best racers and breeders and I decided if this pigeon’s has the quality’s that I want or not for my breeding team. Usually I choose one pigeon to buy and I ask to the owner to show me two or three pigeon’s to couple with the pigeon that I choose to buy. After that I choose the one that I like more and I buy the couple.

After many years on the pigeon’s sport, I already know that which kind of bloodlines cross between them but as I told before, when I buy breeders in Belgium or Holland, I prefer to buy couples, than I breed of them and I see their descendents results. If he results aren’t the expected, I try to couple them wit more one or two partners, after that I see the descendents results and if they still not like that I want, they go out of my breeding loft!

How do select the pigeons that you will send for the next race, blood spot, apple bodied, grease spot etc.

Depending the kind of weather and wind, I basket more percentage of one or two kind of bloodlines that race better on the kind of race that I will have but I examine all of them to see which ones are on the best conditions. I basket more some birds of others bloodlines because the kind of weather or wind can change like happens many times, specially on the beginning of the racing season. With that basketing system, I know that I have a highest percentage of success in all races because I have different kind of top pigeon’s in competition that can win top prizes.

What signs do you look for that a pigeon should be stopped racing???

Usually I pass top racers to the breeding team but sometimes I pass too medium good racers but that they belong to a winning family and they have the breeding quality’s that I want. It happens on the last month, I pass to good racers to my breeding team, they had good results in 2006 but this year they don’t had but both of them belongs to a winning families and they have everything that I want in one breeder and specially they have all the best characteristics of the bloodline that they belong!

Decline of the Sport any ideas to increase membership??

We must promote our sport on the schools, the children’s likes to take care about animals and the racing-pigeon is without doubts a fantastic animal.

Below is the article on the loft Verreckt - Arien from Ulrichs website www.pitts.be and gives a further insight into this great combination and there methods.

This article was written at the end of 2005 so some of the feeding or products used may have changed compared to our recent interview with Pascal.

Introduction

The new starcombination from Tessenderlo (Belgium) is actually a team of  3 pigeon-fanciers. Pascal Ariën, who is the ‘brain’ behind this  colony, works at Duracell Batteries as supervisor. The second member is Agy Verreckt, she takes mostly care  of the youngsters and the widowers, works  as a bank clerk at KBC. Last but not least we have Alfons Verwimp, Pascal his grandfather. Because Agy  and Pascal have a full time job and have just become parents of a son Milan, is the professional help and  care of ‘Fonske’ more than welcome and necessary. The grandfather  lets the youngsters fly and feeds them. He has the unique gift to control the young pigeons without making them too tame.

The pigeon colony exists of aproximately 30 breedcouples, 100 flying pigeons. Next season, they shall have 40 female pigeons in stead of 30. Every year they bread 250 youngsters. They compete mostly with old and year pigeons and in the future they will focus on the national and seminational fondflights. ‘Specialization’ is  most important  in modern pigeon sport, thus Pascal. The youngsters are trained as good as possible, five flights as younster from Momignies or Soissons (100 to 250 km).

Before Pascal played in Tessenderlo he played succesfully toghether with his grandfather under the name: Verwimp- Ariën.

Pigeons

The foundation of the current colony ‘Verreckt-Ariën’ started in 1994. That year we bought a couple of eggs from Toine Lowet Bilzen. We got the eggs from a couple of yearlings from Toine’s Karel Meulemans pigeons. The cock that wa born from these eggs was in 1995 and 1996 our absolute best flyer. For this reason in 1997, when Pascal graduated and really wanted to start with pigeons on a much higher level, he went back to Toine Lowet. He brought 20 eggs from Toine’s best widowers and this was really the start for the successes of today. Two of these 20 pigeons are now froming the ‘super pair’ from Verreckt-Ariën.

In 1999 again 20 eggs from Toine came to Pascal and also this time with succes. The mother of “Amber” 1e National Argenton was born out of one of these eggs. The father of Amber is, of course, a grandson of the superpair (Armstrong).

“Den Dikke”X”Lang Lowet”: “The Superpair”

If we look at the pedigrees of the best pigeons at the pigeon house of Verreckt-Ariën you will notice one thing. All the super pigeons are descended of one couple: Den Dikke X Lang Lowet. In the pedigrees we find names as: Jantje Theelen, Jan Grondelaers and Karel Meulemans. In the first breading year a super pigeon was born: “Elfke Dikke”(428/98). She showed her class the first time at 30 degrees and wind stood north east on Toury(390km), she won the second price, but when she came home she was playing for 10 minutes before entering the loft. After that she also won 3 sacs of pigeon food, first pigeon at the august flights. The other pigeons  on the same loft didn’t flew any prices, so that made her special. In 1999 she gave birth to “Armstrong”, he was basketted 6 times on the mid fond flights and flew 5x coefficient under 1 and 1x under 1,5!! Armstrong gave birth to “Amber” and she flies in 2004 as yearpigeon 6 coefficients under 1,1, with a 5th prov Blois, 5th prov Limoges and a 1st national Argenton of 1340 females!!!Here we only mentioned 1 succes of the successfull children of “Den DikkeXLang Lowet”.

All the good results in 2004 & 2005 were children ,grand- or greatgrandchildren of this super pair!!!!

You can call it really remarkable!!! Is the best breeding pair in Belgium??

20 sons and daughters of this pair are on the breading loft and were matened to the best pigeons of Patricia Verhaegen(Aarschot)from pigeons of the “Jackpot” X “grijze Kanibaal”(origine Dirk Vandijck), Kamiel Nulens(Koersel), family of the “Fenomenale”(1e National Ace Pigeon midfond Belgium 2002), Daems Leon(Laakdal), Eddy Helsen(Laakdal), who has Houben pigeons, line Sony. To secure the future we bought pigeons at Vermeerbergen-Van Reet, Daniel Parijs, Gust Steemans, Jhonny Janssens (National champion youngsters 2005 fond) and Henri Menten (Herselt) who was several times one of the national champions. Every year we new bloodlines to further strengten our own bloodline.

Especially on flights between 450 and 800km this family of pigeons is bearly unbeatable!

Feedingsystem

Our feedingsystem is really classic. We pay attention that females are fed more grease.(small seeds, corn and etra oil and even some peanuts) and the males more protein and stronger food. When they arrive the eating-through is full with a combination of diet, flew, peanuts and small seeds,... everybody can eat what and how much they want. The pigeons themselves know best what they need to recover as quickly as possible. The day after they can finish their big dish an in the evening they are fed lightly. The last 2 or three days before basketting they are fed more ‘heavy’. The day of basketting they are fed three or four times a day and they are kept inside  so they can keep all their energy inside!!

Medical treatment

Before and after the season (September and February), we treat them during 10 days against coli, salmonella and paratyphus. In November and March 8 days treatment against trichomonas. During the season we don’t try to treat them! If we have a problem we go immediatly to the ved, we don’t treat blindly!! In 2004 & 2005 we visited the ved regularly, but there weren’t any real problems!! A few times we treated for the head because they trained less!!!

We also use apple-vinaigre, beer yeast, babypowder and products with aminosours and proteins for the quick recovery of the muscles. Garlic oil and various other oils are put onto the food to built up the musscles and increase the energy at the end of the week. Pure vitamines or powders to increase the condition weren’t used this season. During the breading they get vitamineral with extra protein.

Name:     G.D & E Perry

Number of years racing?

Have been actively racing for 41 years

Did any relatives race pigeons ie: father, grandfather etc?

Yes I started racing with my father

Do your family take an active interest in racing?

Yes my wife Jan is actively involved with the pigeons including the cleaning of the lofts and the loft training  through the week. My daughter Chantelle also helps out when required

Names of clubs you race in?

We flew for 40 years in the Clayton pigeon which unfortunately has now folded, my present club is the Cranbourne Pigeon Club.

Number of fanciers in these clubs?

The Cranbourne has about 12 flyers

Number of Stock pairs housed?

We breed from 40 pairs of stock birds plus a few pairs from the race loft as well.

What are the bloodlines of your breeders?

The Bloodlines we house are Wickham, Bob Eaton obtained mostly from Keith Bainbridge who has now quit the sport and a small selection of Janssens.

The Janssens came about purely by luck as prior to getting them I was not in favour of the imports. A friend was getting out of pigeons and offered me a couple of Janssens, they consisted of 2 nestmate cocks bred down from the famous “Syndicate Pair” of Grenville Evans & Hank Merbis” the hen was a rather large Spanjaards Janssen. The flyer that I got these off contacted me later on and asked if he could have the hen back as a friend of his wanted to buy her, I quickly offered him some hard earned cash and so she stayed in my loft. This is without doubt the best money that I have spent in the pigeon sport. She is now my number 1 Stock hen, the VHA Federation “Old Bird of the Year” in 2006 was a double granddaughter of her. She was responsible for about 65% of my Federation placings in 2006.

Do you inbreed or pair unrelated pigeons for :- I use both methods for breeding

Do you introduce new breeders and how often?

We do not introduce new stock very often

What selection do you use for the pigeons that you introduce ie: Performance, handling, bloodlines etc?

When selecting new pigeons we look at performance first and then the bloodlines.

How do you pair your breeders ie pedigree, performance, inbreeding, handling?

We use all of the above methods when pairing our breeders to maximize the potential of the youngsters for racing,

How many rounds of youngsters do you breed from your best pairs?

We only breed 3 rounds from our breeders as we pair up towards the end of the race season , this provides us with more than enough youngsters to race.

Do you pair your best breeders to more than 1 partner each year?

Very rarely would we do this.

How many youngsters do you breed from your best breeder?-Again its mostly just 3 rounds but occasionally we may foster 1 round of eggs.

Do you medicate before pairing?-

No, we never medicate before pairing and have not had any trouble as our pigeons have a good natural resistance, however I do worm them ONLY.

Do you give your breeders any vitamins etc whilst breeding?

We only give them the “Mineraalen” from Tuerlings and grit which they have access to all year.

How many  birds do you race?

We start the season with 240 race birds including those leftover from the previous season.

Do you medicate before racing

Yes we medicate before racing starts and every 4 weeks whilst racing using Doxy – T and Turbosole.

What distances do you race from?

We only race in the Old Bird Series due to time constraints but we try to be competitive from the first race to the last and this years results shows us that our management and the combination of the right pigeons are working.

For how long do your young and old birds train for each day?

They normally train for between 30 – 60 minutes each day, due to the constant Falcon attacks they do not range great distances away from the loft as in years gone by. It seems that they try and stay with the safety of the loft only a few minutes away.

They get tossed 100klm on Saturday and 150klm on Sunday on John Brislin’s tossing unit.

Do you give supplements whilst racing?

They get vitamins 1 or 2 times per week along with grit at all times.

Give some brief details of your feeding methods for your race birds:-

We used to mix our own feed along the standard lines but our pigeons needed to be trained harder to get the same results as we do now. We changed a couple of years ago to “Lovitts” race mix with the 16 different grains and our road training has decreased but our results are better.

We give a light feed on Saturday and Sunday and the race mix through the week. We do not add more corn or oil seeds towards the end of the week.

When do you retire a racer and is it based on results only or selection?

We mostly stop them based on results but very occasionally have put an unraced pigeon into stock,

What is your proudest moment so far in the pigeon sport?

Obviously winning the VHA “Old Bird Average” in 2006 as well as the “Bird of the year” is one highlight, another would be winning the “Produce” race which my son timed in as we had gone to Queensland for a holiday the day before and as most people would say is seeing a pigeon arrive just before darkness in an all day fly still is a thrill.

Who are the flyers that are your best competition?

There have been many great flyers over the years including John Van Beers, Keith Saggers, John Brislin, George Vella  to name just a few.

When buying pigeons do you buy from a proven pairing or would you buy a nice handler from unproven lines, or based on strain names only.

I would prefer to buy from a proven pairing.

How do select the pigeons that you will send for the next race, blood spot, apple bodied, oil spot etc.

Alertness, Brightness, buoyant in the hand and through observation as a superfit pigeon will standout amongst the others.

What signs do you look for that a pigeon should be stopped racing???

Again through observation as they show the sign that they have had enough.

And lastly Glen would like to thank his wife Jan for the help that she gives him with the pigeons as without that help the results achieved would be nowhere near the outstanding and consistent results that is achieved every year.

Just to show the consistency of this loft in the last 6 years they have finished in the following positions in the Old Bird Average in the VHA against an average of 200 - 230 flyers.

2001 -  4th

2002 -

2003 -  11th

2004 -  2nd

2005 -  19th ( did not race in 3 races )

2006 -  1st

Great flying by anyones standards!!!

The results listed below are responsible for the partnership of G.D & E Perry wiining the VHA Old Bird Average.

Next year we have 20 youngsters from the loft “Arien-Verreckt”

We think they have very good pigeons.

HOW DO YOU PREPARE PIGEONS FOR A RACE.

We give “Fly-vitamines” from the vet Vincent Schreuder.

HOW DO YOU PAIR YOUR BREEDERS ie  by pedigree, performance or how they handle

We pair our breeders by handle and by performance

How Many youngsters you you breed from your breeders, do you breed more from your best pair

Each year we breed from all our breeding couples 3 -4 rounds, so that will be 6-8 youngsters

Do you pair your best cock to more than 1 hen

That depends from the youngsters, If they are not so beautifull, we pair him with another hen!

But if the youngsters are very good and beautifull it stays the same!

My dad says “Never change a winning team”

Do you try new pigeons from other fanciers, if yes how often ( every year ) and how many

Normally we try to get pigeons every year or 2 years. It depends a little bit.

This year we had 60 eggs, but the pigeons weren’t good… So we try from another fancier, that’s Arien-Verreckt this year … we have big hopes for his pigeons … but also on other lofts their pigeons race good so we have a little bit of faith in him and his pigeons. But still … we’ll see …

How do you select the new pigeons that you bring in to breed from

We never put pigeons on the loft without playing them. They always have to prove themselves.

WHO IS THE PIGEON FLYER IN BELGIUM THAT YOU MOST ADMIRE

I admire my father, because he learned me a lot af things about the pigeons!

Without him I didn’t knew what I know now…For me he is the best pigeon fancier ever!

I also admire my boyfriend “Ulrich Lemmens”

Pigeon sport is his passion! If he does something for the pigeons, it has to be correct!

Also because he knows very much about pigeons without having someone to learn him!

He is a natural talent!

The start in Brussegem

The present success story of the Limbourg-colony has its origin in 1987, which was the year in which Erik bought a house with lofts in Brussegem. At that moment, he did not realize that the former fancier had barely won any prizes with these lofts and furthermore, he nearly lost all of his youngsters each year. Erik moved from Deftinge to Brussegem in 1987 and got started with 12 couples. He for his part had to face the disadvantages of the loft and lost entire rounds of youngsters. But Limbourg decided to investigate the cause of these problems and started working on a solution. Although he previously did not attach any credence to negative terrestrial radiation, water veins and so on, he decided to put it to the test. He organized all the lofts like a ‘Faraday Cage’ to eliminate any negative effects, as he had seen at the lofts of other masters at our sport. Thanks to these changes -combined with some other adjustments to the lofts- Erik Limbourg found himself released from trouble and climbed to the very top of national and international pigeon sport in no time. We immediately noticed the spacious and very airy lofts in which the pigeons are housed: no shortage of oxygen at all.

Super year 2005

Erik started the season of 2005 with about 40 breeding couples of which he invariably kept 2 rounds to himself along with some youngsters of excellent top pigeons from the 3rd and 4th round. These youngsters are not easy to keep though, because of the many training pigeons which are released at lofts in the neighbourhood and which pass by at the lofts during the week.

Eric raced with about 24 old cocks, 80 yearlings and 42 racing hens on widowhood, though this number can vary each year depending on the number of free places for yearlings. The season starts the first week of April and the pigeons are basketted as much as possible for speed races each month (if weather conditions are satisfactory) to allow them to gather as much kilometres as possible. At this point, their menu consists of a purification mixture and light feed. As soon as May begins and middle distance races start, Erik alters his feeding strategy.

The purification mixture is gradually being replaced by more ‘substantial feed’ and after Vierzon (so this means 2 weeks after the first national long distance race from Brive) they receive ‘diet’ + sports mixture. Upon their arrival from a long distance race, the pigeons receive a mixture of 1/2 diet + 1/2 sports mixture in their feed boxes during 3 days after which a moderate change to 100% sports mixture takes place. The long distance racers receive a filled feed box of sports mixture 3 days prior to basketting and Erik also tries to provide them with some supplements by giving small portions on the bottom of the lofts to boost their appetite. ‘Energy Plus’ from the company Versele Laga is also administered as an extra source of energy. Erik is aiming to basket the pigeons ‘as round as balloons’; as true sources of energy with substantial reserves. And with success, as prove the attached results.

It is an open secret that Erik Limbourg (sometimes assisted by his father) is often maniacally occupied with his pigeons. Everything has to go smoothly, thus allowing to get the very best out of the pigeons and ‘motivation’ is the most important factor for the race. There are different ways to motivate the pigeons. But remember one thing: Erik Limbourg is a ‘born winner’ and a formidable competitor. If results are not as satisfying as usual, Erik laughs very sourly. Let’s illustrate this by telling an appropriate anecdote that took place in season 2005. The results of the team of old pigeons that raced Limoges Derby back in early July were inferior. The Limbourg-team barely got some small prizes at the end and the jukebox in the pigeon club had never played that loud, even much louder than any time before.

Erik tossed in the clocks very rapidly and returned home with sporty thoughts of revenge but also with his blood boiling. He searched for the reason of the inferior results of the team and found it, but nonetheless, the entire Limoges-team was thrown into the aviary and got the label ‘incompetent’. The answer to this failure was top-class and will certainly be remembered in the region because, during the 3 following weeks, the extra-motivated Limbourg-team won the 1st Prize Provincial every time, respectively in the following order:

1st Provincial (542 p) and 2nd National Souillac 5.985 p.

1st Provincial (417 p) and 6th National Narbonne 4.664 p.

1st Provincial (379 p) and 2nd National Perpignan 3.808 p.

Strain origins and racing method

Erik Limbourg is solely interested in absolute top-class pigeons to populate his breeding lofts. Pretty remarkable with respect to the top results on long distance is the fact that Erik does not possess a real strain of ‘pure distance racers’. We could rather describe it as a crossbreed of 1st National winners + 1st National Acepigeons of Long and Extreme Long Distance with an own strain in which there is a lot of middle distance blood, such as descendants from the famous ‘Swing-pair’ from fellow villager Louis Van den Eynde (a crossbreed of Maurits Voets x Gust Christiaens) that could race ahead for sometimes up to 10 minutes in bright weather and with head wind. Then, there is the Janssen-strain, the "Tarzan-strain" of Scharlaekens and of course the strain of ‘de Slimmen’ (3 x 1st Provincial). The guideline is of course always coupling ‘super’ x ‘super’ !! With only one goal: to bring and to keep speed into the long distance racers !!

Erik does not mind that there are several pigeons in the colony that cannot cope with their distance duties. His tough selection procedure eliminates such birds immediately. The pigeons are not spared at all and race up to 2 x national races as youngsters. The yearling cocks race Limoges Yearlings + Narbonne or Perpignan Yearlings. The hens are now racing St.Vincent (on widowhood) + Perpignan on the nest (small youngsters or end of brood). According to Erik Limbourg, the pigeons are certainly not worn out but this method has the advantage that, in the end, the wheat is separated from the chaff. A method which has not done him any harm, on the contrary…it is in fact the foundation of an endless list of top achievements that fell to his share.

Nourishment : As far as nourishment is concerned, Erik puts his trust in the Vandenabeele-mixture Beyers and Super widowhood Van Robaeys.

PIGEONTALK

Name

Bert Braspenning, Zuiderweg 66, Wijdewormer (The Netherlands)

I am 70 years old and have my first pigeons in 1946 (I was 9 years old).

Number of years racing

I start with racing in 1948 and won direct the first race in the youth division but my bird was also overall provincial winner against more the 3.000 birds.

Did any relatives race pigeons ie: father, grandfather etc

Before the Second World War, my father was fancier in the south of Holland. After the Second World War, many young boys start with pigeon hobby. I start biking in 1953 and from that time, I had together with my father pigeons with great success.

Do your family take an active interest in racing

My wife is always watching when the pigeons arrive, and she tosses the pigeons, she translates my articles for the BHW and Pigeons digest. My oldest son is starting pigeon sport about four years ago and I must say, he is doing very well, he race only with pigeons of his father.

Names of clubs you race in

From 1992 I race in Pigeon members Club “Koog-Zaandijk”, in 1992 65 members and now 35.

Most famous fanciers in these clubs

When I start as a member until now I’m the most well known fancier, and have won hundreds of first prizes and championships on short and middle distance.

Number of Stock pairs housed

I’ve always 24 pairs stock birds/breeders and that are all first prize winners or champion birds but now I am 70 and will go back to 12 breeding pairs.

What are the bloodlines of your breeders

Since the year 2000 I’ve my own strain Braspenning pigeons. The EEG (Europian Commission) has given me a certificate that the Braspenning birds are a official family racing pigeons like Janssen Bros, Houben, Marcelis, Van Loon, De Klak (total 20 different fanciers).

I’ve also the same certificate as official scriber about racing pigeons. In the Netherlands I am the only with two certificates!

The bloodlines of my Braspenning birds are Janssen Bros. I start with that birds in 1952 and bought the last one in 1996. I’ve also bought other birds but they must always have minimal 75% Jansen blood.

Do you inbreed or pair unrelated pigeons for :- Racing

                                                               Breeding

Most I do is inbred or line bred. Sometimes I do very close inbred for breeding.

Do you introduce new breeders and how often

When I introduce new breeders, I buy an absolute top bird and when this is not possible, I buy a daughter of a top bird. I ‘m more the 30 years a judge so that I always try to bred beautiful birds that make good results in the races.

How do you pair your breeders ie pedigree, performance, inbreeding, handling ?

Each year my best racers go to the breeding loft. I pair always winners against winners and champion birds against champion birds. With this system, I race more the 50 years top results.

I buy once in 3 years a new breeding hen from fanciers with Janssen birds. Their youngsters must as yearling race with the same results as my own birds. If not, then the hen and their children go away.

How many rounds of youngsters do you breed from your best pairs

I bred for my self two rounds and I bred two rounds for sale.

Do you pair your best breeders to more than 1 partner each year

A new breeding hen has in their first breeding year two different cocks. Every year I change all my breeding pairs so I have many half brothers and sisters.

Do you medicate before pairing

Before I pair my birds, I send their droppings to my vet for total control. I do this three times a year. When they hatch the first round eggs, I cure against canker and in January, I vaccinate against paramixo and pocks.

After that, I give nothing more against illnesses. My racers, I give them in the racing season once in the three weeks two days medicines against canker. This illness is the biggest problem in the race season.

Do you give your breeders any vitamins etc whilst breeding

I never give vitamins.

How many old birds do you race

I race only short and middle distance with 24 pairs from 1 and 2 years old. Only the best ones from 3 years old are ending in my breeding loft. In addition, I sell them when they are 6 or 7 years old.

How many Young birds do you race

I start the yb season with 60-70 youngsters.

Do you race both old hens and cocks or cocks only

Old birds I race the roundabout system but next year I race only with hens and the cocks remain always at home.

I race the young birds “on the door” (is widowhood for youngsters) on basking day they are together for the whole day. We race on Saturday and Sunday morning the young hens go to their own part of my yb loft.

How many races a year do you old and young birds have

My old birds do 12 races ( 6 sprint and 6 middle distance) while the old bird season and at the end of the season we have the “natour” these are the last 5 sprint races(August/September) for old and young birds in the same race. This mean most of my old birds do 17 races in a season. The young birds make 12 races (7 special yb races and the 5-natour races). When it is possible, I race my old and yb’s every week.

For how long do your young and old birds train for each day

I start with training old and yb’s 14 days before the first race, when the weather is nice I bring them every day away. Nevertheless, in Holland not every day is pigeon weather. Around my loft, my birds must exercise two times a day during one hour.

Do you give supplements whilst racing

In all the parts of my loft, the birds can eat different minerals, salt, grit and red stone.

Give some brief details of your feeding methods for young and old birds

The whole year I give to ALL my old and young birds the same food (Mariman Variamax – 28 different beans, grains a.s.o.). In the morning 13 gram and in the evening 17 gram, for every bird 1 tea spoon little mixture and 3 peanuts. The day before basking day in the afternoon they may eat what they want during a half hour.

When do you retire a racer and is it based on results only or selection

The racing results of my young birds are not important for selection. As yearling and two years old they must win 50% prize 1:10 (12 races against +/- 400 birds comes 100 birds in the prize list, my birds must win 6 prizes in the first 40) so not I select them out.

Important for me are the winners. A bird with two first, one third and one fourth prize and not more is for me a important bird for breeding! I think winners gives winners..

What is your proudest moment so far in the pigeon sport

My proudest moment in the pigeon sport: winner of a car, 3rd National sprint fancier, 1st Ace National Ace pigeon, 39 times first champion sprint in the club and in the races winner of more then 500 first prizes. My best year was 1992; I won in my club 21 first prizes from 29 races.

If you could obtain pigeon from one loft who would it be and why

My whole life I love the original Janssen Bros birds, but I think the time of Janssen birds is over. Only Louis Janssen lives (92 years old) and his birds do not race many years, Louis was not so a good pigeon fancier as his brothers Adriaan and Charel. Louis is the man of the money. I do not know a special loft from were I will have a new breeder. I am 70 years old and with my own breeding system, it is not important that I buy in the coming years pigeons for new blood. However, a good fancier will always look for a good one. You never know!

Pooling pigeons, what criteria do you use??

The pooling time (last 15 years) in Holland is over. In the years before I am pooling all my birds. In that time my hobby cost nothing, the birds has won their own food and bread for the boss.

In the 60 years I have pigeons I had several absolute top birds in my loft.

In1960 won my 59-1022459 the last 5 sprint races (natour) also 5 first prizes.

My 63-963358 was in 1964 and 1965 first general champion (over all the races) in my area. He won in my area against 450 members the first prize from 100 km, 300 km 400 km and 665 km. His daughter 67-182000, named “Three zero’s” has won total 14 times a first prize. The best was my FELLE 88-1572030 he was in 89-90-and 91 general champion. In 1991, the best of all Holland with 13 prizes 1:100; his lowest level was the 35th prize from 4.710 birds. He was also an excellent breeder and has given me eight first prizewinners with 5 different hens. In my most birds is streaming the blood of my famous Felle. I sold him in 1992 to Louella Pigeon World in England.

Decline of the Sport any ideas to increase membership??

Ideas for new memberships: Pigeon sport is a fantastic hobby for the whole family. The organisation has to care the hobby remain payable. The race program must be modernise to the social climate of this day (people wish to go on holiday too), more then one flight in a weekend, race season from April until half of July, then from the end of August until the end of September. Each member can basket 20 pigeons, no more, so every body have an equal chance, and the hobby will not be too expensive. Pigeon sport is not that difficult, most fanciers make it difficult. It is all about good pigeons, to get this you have to select very strict.

Its possible that some members of the forum have not heard of the partnership of G & S Verkerk but i can tell you that they are rated as one of if not the best "On the day" race lofts in Holland.

They have bred , raced and still own 7 Olympiad pigeons which if i am correct no other loft in Holland has EVER had before.

I will post snippets on info on this loft when i can. Below is just some of the results from there super team of pigeons.

It is quite unique that we have 7 Olympiad SPORTS class birds in our breeding loft, which we bred and raced ourselves. In 2007 "Olympic SpongeBob" will attend the Belgium-Olympiad as our latest OLYMPIC-star.

The last decade (1997-2006) we have won 203 FIRST prizes against an average of 2.218 pigeons (no doubles included!) from 70 up to 700 km.
