My recent experience with a stray of my own might provide the answer: A YB I lost 3 weeks ago at Witton Castle (Durham) was reported in Alfreton (Derbyshire) only last Thursday, two nights after it arrived at the fancier's home. He said the bird was a right nuisance as he couldn't get the bird to come into his loft, until the second night it followed one of his OBs in.

So the short answer is that your stray may not want to go into your loft because it's not its home. Like mine, hunger may bring it down, or, as you say, it may clear.
