I think the 'sat-nav' is nearer the mark. Maybes not under the wing, but certainly in the bird's brain. They are first class navigators whatever the conditions, and I think that shows that they have no 'single' way of doing it, they make use of a range of skills. For example they don't seem to even need to see where they are going, researchers 'blinded' birds ~ and they got back to their loft.

Good question my friend, but i think the answer is beyond answering. There is allot of theories but our Maker shore created something extraordinary there. If i had to answer i would also say the earths magnetic field cos that is the only thing not affected by weather or any other external influences.

did anyone see the program a few years ago where they did the experiment with the pigeons where they move the loft from one side of the river to the other and they still found then they move the loft out to sea and the flew out the sea after it .they came up with the idea that they  came home to the loft not your home or allotment

amazing! i have 2 racing pigeons with my fancy birds, so if i take them' say 10 miles away they will find there way home?

if they have been out mate and been flying for a good time ie they go of ranging which means out of site for an hour or so yes you shouldnt have a problem taking them up the road but me personally if its there first time take them 5 miles if they go off ranging for an hour there doing more than that anyway then once they had a cupple from 5 miles take them 10 miles what i do is keep them at the same liberation site until beat back home dont worry the first time they might over fly but one good advise i give you that a mnfc champion told me let them have a fly around home before taking them training they dont mess about then mate they come straight back home no flying around above the loft all the best
