Guest Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 ny wife took her dog who 13 to the vets for an MOT the other nite and told him that he has been having a problem with fleas and what she has been using on him etc ,well anyway after getting the usual stufff to sort them out the vet then said that he would need to be wormed fair enough but this got me thinking if a dog needs to wormed after treatment for having fleas, then ,so must pigeons as mite ,ticks fleas live on pigeons ,so when a pigeon has mite then it must be wormed as well ,is this how yb sickness is contracted as well :-/ :-/ :-/

bobby1 Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 Treatment for pigeon lice is Ivermectin, it also worms the birds at the same time.

Agree, ivomectin every 6 months is very effective for worms and lice.I also use the moxidectin periodically too for worms just to make sure as mine have had the ivomectin for a very long time now and resistance can occur.
bobby1 Posted August 10, 2007 Report Posted August 10, 2007 Have used Ivomectin for a few years now and found it to work fantastic against mites.
DJ Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 i was told that ivermectin only works against one type of worm - is that true?
Guest Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 i was told that ivermectin only works against one type of worm - is that true? Appears its the opposite - its not effective against tapeworm. There are reports of resistance to it tho, follow Wikipedia link, antihelminth is a fancy word meaning 'wormer' and info here on the different classes of wormer and what they are effective against - and how resistance develops? Surprise, surprise, thro repeated use. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthelmintic
