Can somebody explain what is the difference between this and normal iodine, can I use normal iodine diluted in water instead?

Been puzzled for a while by Lugols, and aqueous iodine sales in pigeon magazines  :)

Iodine is not soluble in water. Another chemical e.g. chlorine is added to iodine to make it soluble in water for use as a water disinfectant ... the mixture is called aqueous iodine..

Thanks Bruno, can you tell me the % of mixture and what type of chlorine I have to use

Sorry, that is way beyond my knowledge and experience.

Chlorine, ammonia and iodine  are fairly dangerous substances and mixing them in solution is not something I would advise anyone to try.

Purchasing the off-the-shelf aqueous iodine seems safest.
