Guest Basin View Posted November 3, 2009 Report Posted November 3, 2009 How does Harka-Mectin ( Invermectin ) work regardng external parasites. Does it kill off, for example lice that are present on the primary flights, if so how does it do this. I assume that the Invermectin is gets into the blood stream after application onto the skin and can therefore work within the birds system, but unsure if this can influence parasites already on external primary and other feathering. Your replies on this appreciated.
Guest IB Posted November 3, 2009 Report Posted November 3, 2009 My understanding is that ivermectin does not kill feather-browsing insects very quickly, if at all, unless and until they also feed on skin / skin debris. You are right about systemic action, it goes through the skin into the bloodstream, but action is limited to around 48 hours. A permethrin dip like chlorcarb or spray like Johnsons directly onto the bird's feathers is much more effective for these.
Guest Basin View Posted November 3, 2009 Report Posted November 3, 2009 IB Thanks for the reply, I have just started the birds this season after many years out of the sport. When in the sport before I used dusting powder or spray for the like of lice on the primaries. I read promotional stuff on the Harka-Mectin and this set me thinking on how this actually worked for external parasites...maybe he question should be what external parasities is ths medication good for ? ?
