Guest surfer Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 My brother has been breeding canaries for 3 years now with great success, but this past week he has lost 4 babies in the nest which is as many as he has lost since he started. Nothing is left to chance with him, this I know as he used to be my partner with the pigeons. He has been reading up on it and thinks it might be red mite,and has also read about a German product a powder that you mix with water and spray. This product is produced for pigeon fanciers but canary breeders use it a lot. Does anybody know what this product is called and where it can be obtained. The parents seem to be feeding the young but they still seem undernourished. Any ideas? Roger.Surfer. Roger Thorne (Thorne Bros) Bude.

It is defra approved and produced in the UK. Hope it is something as simple as red mite and he can get it sorted. Regards Joan
George UK Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 hi surfer i use duramitex you mix with water and spay it around the shed loft. i also mix it in with the white wash when i redo the loft inside. hope this helps.

Guest Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 I have kept and bred Gloster canaries for many years with great success and I agree with previous posters, Duramitex. Also powder under the nest felts before they are sown into the pans. Alternatively use carbolic soap to stick the felts in place.
taff Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 hi i bred and showed canarys for 18 years, first thing i would check would be the parents, if they are a bit down and not intrested in the chicks then it could be a mite investation. if so the best thing for killing mite on the birds is frontline spray it is for dogs and cats, put one drop on the base of the tail just above the oil gland. this will kill all the mite on the bird within 12 to 24 hours and last for 3 months. dont worry it dont go into the birds system and is safe to use. next would to check the nest pan put a white tissue over the chicks in the pan and leave for a few minutes, remove tissue and then if there is any mite in the pan you will see them on tissue. but you will soon know if you have any red mite in your bird room by putting your face as close to the cage fronts you will soon feel them. if you cant find any mite well it could be a number of things. let me know if you find any mite or have any more problems
pigeonman007 Posted May 10, 2009 Report Posted May 10, 2009 A good thing I have found for redmite with canaries and finches is double sided carpet tape around the nest area you would be suprised how many redmite can be caught this way just over night. It doesnt irradicate the problem by any means but it does show if you have a problem and catch some of them in the process. One of my mates also recommends dusting heavily with talc powder on the nest felt as this apparently breaks down the shell of the mite. Not sure how reliable this is but he says he never has a red mite problem
