Ive killed 6 of my feeder birds so far in the last 5 days , including 2 today ....ive now vaccinated all the healthy birds with pmv vaccine ...and im deffinetly getting hold of the vaccine for paratyphoid which i hear is now available in the uk. Anyways my luck is so bad right now. :-/ Peter.
Guest Owen Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 All my pigeons are vaccinated with Chevita live vaccine every year. Have you tried it? In the run up to the vaccination I have to use either Baytril or Amoxycyline for 10 days. This is to clear any possible infection out of the birds before the vaccination. Not having had the disease, I have no real idea as to whether the vaccinations really work properly. What have you done about your situation? What has worked and what has not? Have you seen a vet and what did he have to say? Have any of your birds been cured?
Guest strapper Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 the disease is supposedly rampant in germany..has been for a while, with many lofts not realising it. even over here there are believed to be hundreds infected . to ease chance of infection one of the best known defences is actually cider vinegar...the organisms of paratyphoid hate the acidic properties of vinegar...i read it somewhere recently.

Guest peter4pm Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 I dont bother with curing them unless its one of my faveourite birds ...i feel the best way is to cull the infected birds and try and stop it spreading ...Yes ive been using apple cider vinigar but dont want to give them it everyday , useually twice a week. pjc Posted August 8, 2009 Report Posted August 8, 2009 If the symptems are different this time do you know you had para the first time? Did you have any tested or was it a guess?
Guest IB Posted August 8, 2009 Report Posted August 8, 2009 Its a disease that puzzles me. 2000 different strains of Salmonella, only one of them is said to affect pigeons. The source is also said to be mice (or rats) contamination in the loft. But isn't it a different strain again that affects these? So where does it really come from - I think if you know that for sure, you are half way to stopping it.
