My birds have a yeast infection, is it from the Gemthepax? Or has that made it worse? Also what harm does a yeast infection do, my birds look spot on. The infection was only picked up by rutine testing.

I don't know what is in Gemthepax, I do know that it is added to G10 pellets and I fed those last year without problems of this sort.

Yeasts produce toxins - they basically poison the system?

The only 'reason' for yeast infection that I know is as a side-effect to administering antibiotic(s). Certain bacteria produce substances which are toxic to other bacteria and yeasts so being there they help keep everything in balance; an antibiotic wipes out these bacteria too,  creating an inbalance and you can get a yeast overgrowth.

I'd fight fire with fire - I wouldn't be giving 'another' antibiotic, I'd give them a probiotic. That will restore the gut natural balance.

The thread is on 'good' yeasts, and there's a post in it on 'bad' yeasts which has triggered my memory that garlic kills yeast. Relevant extract from paper already posted on main garlic thread:-

Antifungal

Fungi demonstrated to be susceptible to garlic in lab tests include the genera Microsporum, Epidermophyton, Trichophyton, Rhodotorula, Torulopsis, Trichosporon, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Candida, including Candida albicans. It is reported that garlic is more effective against pathogenic yeasts than nystatin, especially Candida albicans

Maybe worth remembering that - so wouldn't advise giving brewers yeast within 48 hours of giving garlic?

Back Garden Fancier, be careful with reading to much into your test results!

A friend of mine was using a test facility and his results were coming back showing a high yeast level, he doesn't use brewers yeast or any products containing yeast.

When talking to other fanciers in his area who used the same facility all there results were comeing back with high yeast.

He then sent some droppings of a bird out of interest and the result was again very high yeast, when the lab was asked if he should race the bird, they said no, you will never see it again in that condition!

The owner then told the lab what he thought of there results as the bird topped the fed 2 days before the test and was sent the following week and topped the fed again!
