westburylofts Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 Hi All I have a yearling hen who is having trouble standing, she is in good condition but sunday i found her unable to stand any idears RAY
Guest Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 Ray Sounds like a classic case of clacium deficiency, which can easily be cured, break a milk of Magnesia tablt into 4 parts, give her 1/4 a time over two days. As a quick first aid measure, you can squirt a could of cc's of milk down her crop. In the lonmg term, I would purchase a bottle of calcium glucomate from your nearest farm supply store, a few deops in the drinkers a couple of times a week should ensure that your hends so not becomre calcium deficient. Keep me posted Linda

westburylofts Posted January 30, 2006 Author Report Posted January 30, 2006 SHE HAS LAID HER SECOND EGG ON SATERDAY NIGHT, IT WAS AFTER SHE HAD LAID THE SECOND EGG THAT I NOTICED THE PROBLEM WHEN SHE TRIED TO GET OFF THE EGGS FOR HER FEED, HAVE BEEN TALKING TO AN OLDER FANCIER ON THE PHONE AFTER POSTING THIS TOPIC, HE SAID THAT IT IS CALLED POST-EGG-LAYING PARALYSIS. HE TOLD ME TO LOOK ON PAGE 170 OF THE FLYING VET'S BOOK PIGEON HEALTH & MANAGEMENT. SURE ENOUGH THERE IT IS IN BLACK AND WHITE. VERY INTRESTING READ. AND IT ALSO SAID THAT CALCIUM DEFICIENCY IS A POSSIABLE CAUSE AS WELL AS A TRAPED NERVE FROM LAYING AN EGG. SO THANKS AGIAN FOR YOUR HELP, SPOT ON AS NORMAL RAY
MsPigeon Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 HE TOLD ME TO LOOK ON PAGE 170 OF THE FLYING VET'S BOOK PIGEON HEALTH & MANAGEMENT. SURE ENOUGH THERE IT IS IN BLACK AND WHITE. VERY INTRESTING READ. RAY Don't you just love that book Ray? I got it for Christmas! Carol

mobster Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 isnt that what we call leg paralysis? a friend of mine has a pigeon suffering also from leg paralysis. just came form a race and suddenly cannot stand on its leg. does milk of magnesia will help ?
Guest Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 Milk of Magnesia is a first aid treatment for calcium deficiency only
westburylofts Posted January 31, 2006 Author Report Posted January 31, 2006 OUR HEN WE THINK WAS SUFFERING FROM A TRAPPED NERVE, SHE HAS MADE A FULL RECOVERY. WE GIVE OUR BIRDS NEW BORN BABY MILK POWDER ON THE CORN 3 TIMES A WEEK, SO THOUGHT THERE WAS PLENTY OF CALCIUM IN IT, RAY
Guest Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 Dry some chicken eggs sheeels Ray, crush them with a rolling pin and mis a bit with the grit, excellent for keeping on top of the calcium
Guest Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 Always difficult to give an opinion when you aren't given the full facts ... Half the battle seems to be making the right 'first' call ... injury or illness? Get that wrong and so is everything else you do!!! On injury, the sciatic nerve to the legs runs through the kidney and close to the 'egg works'. Causes some birds temporary paralysis problems during laying, OR when there's kidney problems. The other post on 'post-race paralysis' appears different though? Another injury, like taking a knock, e.g. hitting HT wires?

Guest Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Gary I would not give babies calcium tablets, I would rather, given it them in good quality oyster shell gtit and maybe a drop or two of calcium glucomate in the drinking water a couple of times a week.
