westy Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 i have a ten yr old woe tumbler he is limping is this due to his age or is there a problam .
MsPigeon Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 Is there any swelling on his foot or joints? Does his foot feel hot or look red?
Guest Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 First thing I would check on with an older birds is the ring, it may be getting tight and causing swelling.
westy Posted April 11, 2006 Author Report Posted April 11, 2006 the ring is not tight it all seems ok apart from thr limping
MsPigeon Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 If you can't see anything wrong then theres not much you can do but watch it. Maybe you could limit his movement by putting him in a cage or nest box so it heals more quickly. He probably just hurt himself. Carol
storm rollers Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 westy as its a westi it could be a feather strugling to break the skin or something along them lines have a close look m8:)
Guest shadow Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 It may be its age but it could also just have had a knock just keep an eye on it and see if it gets any worse.
Guest speckled Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 |Hi westy try looking underneath the ring, as thay have just started finishing breeding, sometimes all the dust get under the ring.It sometimes needs a little, help to be removed.as a bath dont shiffed all the dirt. ;D ;D ;D. Just take a look i might be wrong, but whats the harm in looking ah> ;D ;D Speck.
jimmy white Posted April 11, 2006 Report Posted April 11, 2006 if its just started limping could be injurie, and as speck saysif its clean under the ring, usually if its really thick solid matter etc ,the leg would start to swell, but it does this gradually, if it doesnt clear up in the next day or two,and the ring is loose i would say its a bit arthritic due to age , but their usually a bit older than that for that condition
westy Posted April 12, 2006 Author Report Posted April 12, 2006 thanks all will do all what u told me to do.
Guest Posted April 15, 2006 Report Posted April 15, 2006 will it limp if i give it a biscuit? Depends. If its a 'wagon wheel' don't roll it over the bird's foot ;D Wondered if there were any signs of improvement, Westy?
snowy Posted April 15, 2006 Report Posted April 15, 2006 hi jim, bruno & all, no improvement, checked bird , ring ok, leg looks ok, no swelling, no change in colour, looks perfect, but still limping, will watch carefully.
MsPigeon Posted April 15, 2006 Report Posted April 15, 2006 no swelling, no change in colour, looks perfect, but still limping, will watch carefully. Then it is most likely in the hip joint Snowy and Westy. Does it fly out? It could have injured it landing or hitting a wire. If it is just a breeder is it scraping with another cock? Or maybe just old age like Jimmy says. Not much more you can do. Yours in the sport. Carol
Guest Posted April 16, 2006 Report Posted April 16, 2006 Just a belated thought, Westy. If the bird has had a knock, or caught a toe in something, I've noticed they'll keep the affected foot off the ground when perched up AND when down on the floor. Usually takes 10 days to a fortnight before the foot's back on the ground and the bird's walking normally.
westy Posted April 16, 2006 Author Report Posted April 16, 2006 the leg has been like it for a while at first it was not to bad i thougth he was walking like it because of his muffs on his feet bet it is getting worse could it be the length of the claws (nails) on his feet they look a bit long but not sure for a westy
Guest Posted April 16, 2006 Report Posted April 16, 2006 i dont think it is a major problem as 3 of my youngbirds were limping quite badly and i noticed over about 2-3 weeks it just faded of:) however if the problem persists it is still ok as the limp will not effect the birds performance (you dont need feet to fly!!!) all the best with the problem and hope it fades like mine cheers carter
Guest speckled Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 :-/ Just a though, try putting some oil on the birds seed its good for the joints, ;D ;D keeps them supple, i use a litle olive oil, each week on the corn, might help the other oler pigeons in the long run, just another thought Speck
