jimmy white Posted April 22, 2006 Report Posted April 22, 2006 in my opinion, most ailments with pigeons are caused by stress [ which could cover many things] if we had good ventilation , dry lofts, clean lofts, less birds per loft, keeping birds tame and at" home in their loft", and the constitution bred in to them, less antibiotics, and more buckets [not meant in a bad way] i think you would save a lot of money, and reap the benefits
Guest shadow Posted April 22, 2006 Report Posted April 22, 2006 Fully agree with you on that one Jimmy.
bewted Posted April 22, 2006 Report Posted April 22, 2006 well said jimmy, when i raced i never used any medicines(antibiotics) i think too much used now and mostly not needed,,,,ted
TheSaddler Posted April 22, 2006 Report Posted April 22, 2006 Totally agree Jimmy - Most of the problems are stress related. Some we can control e.g. the loft environment .....but others are beyond our control - Diseased pigeons mixing with ours during a hold over, poor hygiene on the transporter, poor quality food during hold overs, dirty water when birds go down bad training tosses for youngsters etc... We have to treat to control these factors..

Agree with what is being said, and your post, but would like to pick up on the above points which I've edited down. Can't agree that these things are beyond our control. We can and should surely be doing something about these: Diseased pigeons mixing with ours during a hold over: topical, because our race license conditions are quite clear - only healthy birds go into the race basket on marking nights, and our fed (at least) has someone nominated at club level to turn problem birds away. poor hygiene on the transporter make sure that it is cleaned and disinfected. poor quality food during hold overs make sure that the birds get the best available. Even @ £12 a bag, divided between maybe 200 federation members = peanuts. Raising the old question of how much fancier and how much bird (you know 60% bird, 40% fancier kinda thing) think we all should be making sure that we as fanciers put in ;D 110% effort to our 40% ;D to make sure that we've done our bit.
keano Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 you only have to read the homing world every other advert is give a pigeon this give it that the list is never ending. keep it simple
TheSaddler Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 Jimmy - Do you treat for canker? if so, do you use natural products?
jimmy white Posted April 23, 2006 Author Report Posted April 23, 2006 HI SADDLER IVE NEVER TREATED FOR CANKER FOR YEARS, I HAVE A PACKET OF SPARTRIX THERE, BUT IT MUST BE OUT OF DATE BY NOW[ LIKE ME ;D ;D] I REALLY THINK A LOT TO DO WITH IT, IS THE CONSTITUTION OF THE BIRD, AND I THINK THIS CAN ONLY BE ACHEIVED BY GOOD LOFT HUSBANDRY, AND THE CULLING OF ANY THAT DONT COME UP TO PERFECT STANDARD [HEALTH WISE] THATS ONLY MY OPINION [AT THE MOMENT IM GIVING THE CHISOLM HEALTH NATURAL PRODUCTS, AND ALL SEEMS TO BE WELL,FIRST TIME IVE TRIED IT] :)
Guest Posted April 23, 2006 Report Posted April 23, 2006 you can't beat natural health i think blindley treating birds is the way to the slippery slope, if birds ever get ill dispose of them weak link i've disposed of birds that have cost £1000's don't care what they cost got to go, will not treat them, must have natural health
Guest Posted April 24, 2006 Report Posted April 24, 2006 I will pick up on the point that Jimmy White raised, it is imperative to build up a pigeons natural immune system from birth, then they will have a stronger constitution ot ward off anything that is floating about in the race baskets, birds with a weak immune system will catch anything and everything. We feed the CTHP from day one of a birds life as we feed it to our breeding stock and we have little or no health problems with our pigeons
Guest Posted April 25, 2006 Report Posted April 25, 2006 I have recently changed my YB loft so Ive got 12ft x 6ft of space for 25 YBs and they have loads of boxes and air space compared to last year where I had 36 in half that space. I can split the loft to make it easier to catch them when training. They seem to be in really good health with very little fighting got a place to perch etc. One thin I have noticed is when I walk in to clean them out on a morning, due to the loft being semi-dark (due to having the windows covered, whilst the cocks are out) they dont blink an eyelid and just lay on one wing while I clean around them. Ive been putting a natural product called Trikanox in the water and their droppings have been perfect from day one. So I have to agree with Jimmy, more air space and less birds seems to be the answer.
