snowy Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 had a pigeon from a race 2 weeks ago couldnt land in properly legs real swollen! took to a local experienced fancier & he said they might heal? 2 weeks later pigeon is moving about but legs still swollen same as before ring very very tight & no improvement any sugestions. i think he hit a wire, there is movement in his legs, but i feel sorry for him, & think he is best being put out of his misery?? please please any sugestions as this is one of the birds gifted by the late Mickie B.
snowy Posted September 9, 2006 Author Report Posted September 9, 2006 thanks rose, but the ring is real tight, but can be moved (just about) & it struggles to stand ive had it in a nest box with straw in it & all it does is lie down & struggle to get food & water
jimmy white Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 had them like that as well snowy sometimes its the ring that makes it worse, try some vaseline and try and work it in to get the ring moving, keep trying to turn the ring gradually bit by bit and see if you can get it turning if you can get the ring turning keep bathing the leg in very cold water ,,,see how that goes first
THE FIFER Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 YES A GOOD THING IS TO MAKE A HAMMOCK FOR IT IF U KNOW HOW, THIS LETS IT HANG UP WITHOUT PUTTING ITS LEGS DOWN KEEPING IT OFF HIS LEGS, IF U HAVE A BODDY AND RIDEWOOD CATALOGUE U WILL SEE ONE IN THERE AND GIVE U AN IDEA HOW TO MAKE ONE. KEEP PUTING ITS LEGS IN COLD WATER, AND IF THE RING GETS TOO TIGHT THEN IT WOULD HAVE TO COME OFF.
Guest speckled Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 Sorry to here that snowy. try running the leg under cold water, for a while it will numb it for a short whille, why ya check for any loose dirt under the ring.No it sound strange but it do work, :-/ do this about 3 times a day ya soon see the swelling go down.as for racing it i have had a cock bird like that does not affect his landng when entering the loft back from a race. only thing is ya have to be patient when it come to thing like this, but its only if ya wonted to show the bird.it will not be suited.Pleanty of rest quiet & TLC hope it improves Speck
Guest Posted September 9, 2006 Report Posted September 9, 2006 This bird aptly named Braveheart came back with both his legs broken, put drinking straws on both legs, cut the toe off an old sock, put it on his body to secure his wings and hung him on the banana rack for about three days, had to hand feed him, but he made a full recovery and ended up 8th Champion Young bird in the Club, unfortunately he got hawked as a yearling
jimmy white Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 EXCELLANT PHOTO FROM HYACINTH,, YOU CAN ALSO MAKE A HAMOCK WITH A PAIR OF TIGHTS, BUT MUST SAY HYACINTHS LOOKS THE BUSINESS [AND ITS NICE TO KNOW ITS REPAID HER :)]
snowy Posted September 17, 2006 Author Report Posted September 17, 2006 legs far too gone now really swoolen & getting bigger
Jeremy Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 Hi there You might have paratyphoid in this bird which can cause swollen joints and go off there legs. Treat with bayril for 10 days should cure it.
Jeremy Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 Ps. I would cut the ring off as soon as you can.
