Guest Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 some of the views on using baytril seem quite sensible and innocent ,but how do you determin abuse ,now anything that is not normal to the pigeons system can be regarded as alien ok some will say its beneficial ,but will someone tell me what is and is not abuse ,as giving pigeons a foreign body wether it be canker cocci or what is abuse, lets hear what yous think,
NANCYVIEWLOFTS Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 all species when treated for a illness have foreign bodies put into their system be it man dog bird etc etc this is to cure a complaint when the complaint is cured stop using it abuse is when you continue using it because you think it may help you up the result sheet YES its been said that fanciers have used baytril as a pep up when in fact its a broad spectrum antibiotic USE it dont abuse it no wonder half the birds in this country are propped up failures ITS getting out of hand we are more interestd in shoving things down the birds throat than understanding how birds tick look at the stalls at BLACKPOOL more and more medicine stalls all crammed with fanciers trying to buy the magic formula Hands up how many of us if offered something that was said would make your birds win each week would honestly ask what was in it
Guest Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Wasn't quite sure what the thread was about Sammy. Thought that it was something new that had cropped up from all the new Animal Health & Welfare laws last year. There was a vet writing in the BHW letters page a year or so ago saying he had been contacted by RSPCA to provide a guide as to what could be considered 'normal practice' in a pigeon loft, and he asked readers for comments. Forget vets name, but he provided only a web address [his practice] for readers to leave those comments. I did have a looksee, but the website pigeon 'button' hadn't been activated, and I haven't seen anything since on this. So I think the general idea is that we will be told 'in black and white' what constitutes abuse ... but surely we should already know? :-/
Guest Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Small world!!! ;D Was looking thro the next thread and followed link in the last post for David Parsons. He's the man from the BHW and this is his questionnaire link ;D ;D :- http://www.poultryhealthcentre.com/pigeons/Pigeonhusbandry.htm
jimmy white Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 my own opinion on abuse of medicines if the doctor doesnt advice it, then dont take it other wise your abusing it,, i think that goes for the pigeons too, but the doctor[ or vet] should be an expert in this field,, unfortunately some are not and are more interested in money
Guest slugmonkey Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 The wide spread use of this stuff is going to bite us in the A#&* at some point abuse of this stuff results in resistant strains of disease this is not a if but a when there are numerous strains of many common disease that have mutated into much worse afflictions because of the use of antibiotics and we surly will see this at some point in time
Keepsmilingqueen Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 Only use when you have a definate diagnosis, Antibiotics are about as much use as a chocolate fire guard against a virus, they dont cure it at all and only help birds develop a resistance so that when you really need the antibiotic it wont work, also some antibiotics are bacteria specific rather than broad based so you need a certain one for a certain illness, and often the broad based ones destroy the good bacteria along with the bad ;D in my oppinion they should be used with caution and certainly not incorperated into a regular treatment routine without extreame good cause sharron ;D
Keepsmilingqueen Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 but having said that most vets know less about pigeons and there ailments (or just dont seem to care) than fanciers, whish is a shame :'(
