I found a baby pigeon on the side of the road in November 2006, although she eats well, her feathers seem to be taking forever to grow, especially under her wings, and her wings do not have the long flight feathers yet they are so tiny. Her tail is just a little stub. What can I do any help would be much appreciated, she is a wood pigeon and i am very attached to her now. thanks .xx

if u live near or can contact a RSPCA office, as those wild birds need looking after, if u have some pigeon food or wheat open its mouth and put some in it, it will also need water, very important, but sugest u get in touch with the RSPCA.

Yes, noticed the wild birds were breeding a bit later than usual last year. But the food supply still disappears quickly at that time of year. Are you sure you have a wood pigeon (white bars on wings, white 'big eye size' spots near the back of the neck) and not a collared dove (white collar round bottom of neck)?

Sounds like the bird's feather growth is stunted maybe down to poor quality of or poor nourishment value of the bird's food. Are you feeding grain, for example wild bird seed, which is high in protein and ideal for a growing bird's needs?

bruno, woodpigeons do not have wing bars let alone white ones and collared doves have a black collar not a white one.

I have collared doves nesting in next door's garden.  I can assure you they have white in their collars, and that is most prominent, even your own picture clearly shows white in the collar and that is what you will probably see in flight too. The one thing I did notice that the birds here in Falkirk were a slightly different colour and pattern from those I 'd seen in the West of Scotland along the Forth & Clyde Canal. Wouldn't be surprised if there were regional differences in your lot too.

I also have wood pigeons by the score here. I'd always wondered if the white spots on either side of the neck were meant to fool aerial predators, and I know that they have white in their wings. Your own photo and the one in this link are both of birds resting, in flight the white wing bar is very visible, and there's a reference to that white bar in this link:-

i think fi fi that being a woodpigeon , they are naturaly wild birds, and have differant feeding habits than homing pigeons or indeed street pigeons , they need a lot of greens and certain insect life etc [have seen the inside of a crop of a woody packed entirely with clover] so really wouldnt think it was getting the proper feeding you could give  i do realise your well meaning , best a vet advise :)good luck
