fantailBB Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 I have never raised pigeons before and I just purchased 4 white fantail pigeons. They are arriving United States Postal Service today after being in the mail for 3 days (not my choice) and I would like to know what to do in case they are stressed from shipping. thanks

Just make sure the get plenty of fluids and a good meal Racing pigeons can be in the baskets for three days but they are supplied with water
fantailBB Posted October 12, 2007 Author Report Posted October 12, 2007 thanks, DOVEScot. I'm from Mississippi in the USA. I'm not sure if they have water in the box or not, I hope so though! If not though, I am giving them water and I have wild bird seed will that be okay to give them?

Guest Posted October 12, 2007 Report Posted October 12, 2007 I would be very surprised if any company would accept livestock for transport on a 3 day journey without some means of food & water during the journey. If the birds have been deprived of food & water then water is the priority as soon as they arrive. Wild bird seed would be good for a day or so, high-energy food, but watch they don't gorge themselves on it, their first feed maybe just a couple of handfuls between them, should hold them for a couple of hours while they get used to their new surroundings.

Did it never occur to you to learn about how to care for pigeons before you got some?,you owe it to the birds to at least have the basics in place.
fantailBB Posted October 12, 2007 Author Report Posted October 12, 2007 Thanks, invincible_spirit and bruno for your support and advice. They have arrived and did have water. They are in very good condition and taking to their new surroundings wonderfully. Two of them even stood on my hand. I'm just so glad that they are in good condition, I had been reading and trying to learn every little thing that I could before purchasing them and I had read some horror stories about shipping and was scared. I didnt know what to feed them "special" if they did indeed arrive stressed. Thank yall SO much for all of your help!!
