0pensaysme Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 Hi All, I have a pigeon that is not very well, (its a fancy breed called a king) no visible signs other than very slightly breathing. No noise from the throat or wet beak etc I noticed that its gone off its food but today its crop is full this evening. I fed it peanuts to encourage it to eat . Thats when i noticed it's having problems picking up the peanut on the ground first/second attempts fail (beak hits the ground) but third attempt gets the peanut. on the other attempts it gets it first time. The bird is in a heavy malt, and the eyes are clear and shiny as they should be. I've also noticed that the yearling from the pair has the same problem. any one have a clue what could be the problem?
OLDYELLOW Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 could be a number of things see a vet . Have you had them vacinated against paramixovirus ?
paul10121968 Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 hello.i have been reading about the paramyxovirosis.it is true that disordered vision(missing the corn)is a nervous disorder associated with the virus.the gastro intestinal signs appear first(watery or bloody diarrhoea) followed by the nervous disorders, which can take a few days to several weeks to follow.however if your birds have been vaccinated but a long time ago, they may be suffering from a less typical form of the disease ie nervous symptoms without gastro intestinal problems or vice versa.either way i would isolate the bird untill you can verify what the problem is.
0pensaysme Posted August 27, 2008 Author Report Posted August 27, 2008 Thanks for your replys Not vaccinated against any thing, i have been waiting for the malt to finish before I start. I missed the opertunity before breeding and now its the malt. I don't have a place where i can isolate the bird, i'm planning to get another shed where i can next month. Its my fist year and i'm still learning but not fast enough.
OLDYELLOW Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 see a vet , vacination for paramixovirus is a must as its been doing the rounds this year
paul10121968 Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 its also worth noting that the bird does not neccesarily have to be culled if it is pmv as most make a full recovery in about 3 or 4 months and can go on to be excellent racers and breeders.
0pensaysme Posted August 27, 2008 Author Report Posted August 27, 2008 Thanks lads, what date do you vacinate. Been reading old posts here and it looks like that racing birds can't race until they been vacinated. But when is the first race of the year?
Guest Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 paramixo is all over the midlands at the moment ,any birds that look ok GET THEM INJECTED as soon as pos .
Guest IB Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 No offence, but it is very easy to jump to conclusions. Paramyxo is a contact disease, either you or your bird would have to have been in contact with a bird having the disease. How could it get in to your loft? You say the bird has a full crop? Doesn't sound like it had much bother picking up all that grain, does it? Are you sure it wasn't just toying with the peanuts because it wasn't hungry, or maybe they weren't fresh enough? And never leave a bird you even suspect has a problem in with the others. Make room -even if its a cardboard box - pop it into it out of harms way for at least a couple of days.
Guest ljb107 Posted August 27, 2008 Report Posted August 27, 2008 You need to find a box big enough for it first!
