i have a few birds that have started to lose feathers along the windpipe to the top of the ccrop basically under their beaks someone said it mite be mites under the skin but surely if that was the case it would spread not just in one straight line or could it just be that when their feeding out the trough their just rubbing  them selves as all birds are fit and healthy

it could simply be that in their rush to the trough they rub aggressively against the edge trying to get at the feed.

How long have you been using these troughs? Add a pinch of flax, linseed, and hemp per bird. Are thet starting the molt? Is your loft vermin free? Are they being spooked? Is the skin reddish and sore looking? Glen.

theres no point in binning good troughs,, theres a womans sound advice for you lol, simple but effective,  :)

if this is not caused by the troughs, theres a possibility, that this could be "depluming mite" these are tiny mites that actualy eat through the base of the smaller feathers [usually the chest] leaving the root of the feather still in, theres many" cures" for this, a very old one is rubbing carbolic soap suds into the bare areas, and around [theres many more modern methods , im sure the forum members would advise] the problem with this is  , you cant see the results untill the birds moult these" roots", then , hopefully look brand new :)

Look to see if the feathers are snapped at the base if they are its proberly mite I know a few people with it. Lighter fluid dabbed on with cotton wool will kill the might but you won’t see the result until the molt, if they were pulled out by the trays they would grow straight back like if you pull a flight feather out. Don’t worry about it I have seen pigeons top the fed with it

dont worry their just going through their moult, they can start to look a little on the scruffy side when their body feathers start to come out.
