Guest Denny Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 Hi, Went into my loft today and found a bird settled on the ground, when the other birds came towards me I noticed this bird limping. I managed to capture it and look at its legs. There appears to be no major injury that I can see (please bear in mind I am in experienced and untrained in bird injuries) I felt its feet and one is cold to the touch the other is warm. The bird puts its foot on the floor and limps then settles on the floor or perch. I have place the bird in a small basket on its own so that it can settle, but how can I check it properly, what should I do to try to help it? The bird came in yesterday with no problems so this injury must have happened in the loft today. Please can you help me ? Thank you
pjc Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 it may have bumped it on a perch or something else in the loft. If its putting it to the floor it hasn't broken it but check for movement compared to the other leg incase of dislocation.
Guest pigeon82 Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 is it a young bird i had this with a youngbird about 6 weeks old not to dishearten you but that was the first thing i noticed later after this the bird stopped eating properly then just gave in i had to put the bird out of its misery there was noway back for it keep a lose eye on it but would seperate it from the rest in case there is anything bad with it still dunno what it was but the bird will or most likely end up losing its balance pal
Guest Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 i think its just bumped it put in a basket with plenty of straw for a day or two they have a remarkable recovery rate things you think would kill them is over in no time just make sure there is no thread/string wraped round the leg at the top

How will I know it'd dislocated? How can I put it back if it is? Sorry but have no idea.
Guest pigeon82 Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 i only had the same about 4 weeks ago thats why i posted what i did i know its hard but defo seperate even if it is a knock just to be on safe side
pjc Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 pull the good leg out straight, then allow the leg to bend again and gently rotate/pivot the upper part of the leg. Then gently try the bad leg and see what happens, if similar movement but the bird flinches/trys to pull it away then its either gone back in or its a knock, you may even see some bruising under the feathers.
Guest IB Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 Please can you give me an idea on what range of movement to expect. How will I know it'd dislocated? How can I put it back if it is? Sorry but have no idea. If it was dislocated it would just be hanging limp, and the bird would flop-over as soon as it tried to put weight on it. Fact that bird can raise & lower foot off and on floor shows things on that score to be OK. Don't think hot / cold is a worry either. Sounds very much like a knock, or a bump, a few days rest away from other birds and it'll be back on its feet again.
Guest puresoontjen Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 i had a simelar bird as that. i washed the feet then looked all over them and found a spit at the bottom of it foot. i put antiseptic on it 3 day it was fine. wash the feet and look for wounds if nothing there the its the uper leg.proberly knocked it
