Guest paulrstokes Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Looking for advice on the following situation. Loft of 19 pairs all feeding babies of various ages, yesterday a six year old hen could not get off the floor, and was panting with her beak slightly open. Picked her up and found she was quite light with food in the crop. the throat had a sort of black film coating it, and it had a bad smell. Seperated her, and this morning still alive to my surprise, corn in crop not digested. Checked other birds in the loft and can find nothing else, also the youngsters she has been feeding are superb. Any Ideas???
Guest Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Hi Paul, have you tried http://www.chevita.com/ it should help you out ;D
ch pied Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 sour crop look's like it , try to empty the crop , charcoal tab's cheap from health shop , charcoal should sweeten the crop ,
Guest IB Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 I agree and think a tablespoon of vinegar in a jar of drinking water would see this off. I would expect an empty crop (may vomit) and messy droppings next day but forming up again quickly, certainly within 2-3 days.
sammy Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 before anything gets shoved down the birds throat it would be better to remove the feeding from the crop this is whats causing the sour crop in the first place clear that then all is well
Guest paulrstokes Posted February 22, 2008 Report Posted February 22, 2008 Hi Guys thanks for all your help. Unfortunatly she was dead this morning, probably gone too far, to be fair I didn't think she would last the night when I first posted. At least if I ever come across it again I know what it is and have ordered some charcoal tablets from the chemist to keep on the medical shelf. Amazing how it has just affected the one bird, everything else in the loft youngsters included are absaloutly fine. Thanks Again.
