flashbaztard Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 hi all i rescued a wild pidgeon that fell down my chimney a couple of days ago but whilst trying to grab him [with him flapping soot everywhere ]i grabbed hold of him, only to be left with his tail feathers [caught him again ok] i have kept him in a out door aviery since[thought he had damaged his eyes with the soot, but now seem ok] he flys around the cage ok! do you think it is ok to release him or should i keep him till he grows some tail feathers? i feed the wild pidgeons every day on my bird table and 100,s of his pals come down, should i let him go when they are there? if you reacon that he can fly/steer ok i plan to just leave the door open so he can escapelet me know guys please! :-/
Guest IB Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 If it is a wild pigeon, the sooner its returned the better. Having no tail shouldn't be a problem, should grow back in a oner in about 4-6 weeks. Would be doing that anyway (only 2 at a time ) over the next few months.
flashbaztard Posted July 8, 2008 Author Report Posted July 8, 2008 :)thanks will leave the door open first thing in the morn!
Peckedhen Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 I think that he needs his tail...do you have somewhere you can keep him away from your tame birds? I wouldn't release him!
carlsberg Posted July 8, 2008 Report Posted July 8, 2008 should not be a problem if he only has part of his tail just let him out and he should be fine
flashbaztard Posted July 9, 2008 Author Report Posted July 9, 2008 :)thanks will leave the door open first thing in the morn!
flashbaztard Posted July 9, 2008 Author Report Posted July 9, 2008 thanks guys [now i am confused!] he has no tail feathers at all. and i guess that they have tail feathers for a reason, [i did leave the door open for 10 mins before i read these replies but luckily he hadnt left!] so i have decided to keep him in a few weeks till he gets at least a few feathers, he has plenty of food and water with him so i will leave contact to the utmost minium [i,ll just take a peek now and then] i will let you all know how it all turns out! [if any experts think im doing wrong let me know!] thanks again! ;D

As Peckedhen says, see how it goes after a couple of weeks - good if his tail feathers are back. If he looks alert and is eating and drinking, that's great. You're the sort of person pigeon fanciers appreciate if one of ours goes missing!
jimmy_84 Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 i have a bird that fly's well with no tail feathers a roller and she fly's perfect without her tail
Peckedhen Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 i have a bird that fly's well with no tail feathers a roller and she fly's perfect without her tail ;D ;D He needs his tail as a sort of rudder for steering and, also to act as a brake when he is landing. Thanks for caring for him....it shouldn't be too long till his new tail grows, maybe four weeks or so.

Guest IB Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 Think you've got to look at the bigger picture. Feathers are designed to come away if a predator gets hold of them. The bird losing its tail doesn't stop it flying. It is still the wild bird breeding season and you and I have no idea if that bird is still raising a family. For all we know there may be a couple of youngsters out there depending on it for food & water. Only the bird knows so at least give it the option to clear. If it can't or doesn't want to go, it'll stay.
Guest slugmonkey Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 I had a bird come off a race in 4 position with no tail Actually this is called a power molt you should also pull all the wing feathers as well this bird will be a lot healthier and very easily able to beat the other ferals to your feeding area lol
DOVEScot Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Done the same thing to one of our pigeons when I tried to stop it getting out, flew fine it just did not glide as good as the others :-/
