hi kev

with red stone grit i only put an hand full down every day for them,i once watched a friends pigeons eat half a bag of red stone grit, they were really bad next day,if they keep gulging it have your birds checked for worms and cocci, but usually when you first put red grit down they will eat the lot but after a few day should slow down.

i think it may be the salt content .in it.

Back when I was a teenager, Kilpatricks used to do a grit that the birds gorged on, and that had a high salt content. I don't think it has anything to do with bodily needs, all animals seem to have a craving for salt and will eat it to excess, including us humans - we are said to eat 2/3 times more than our daily needs.

Hard grit is use to grind the corn and the soft great i.e. red grit dissolves and releases minerals and trace elements.

Let them have what they want they will slow down the intake in a couple of days. They are only building up on what they had been lacking.

another one of his moments ;D ;D ;D ;D

as far as grits go and minerals etc ,, if their all in front of them,, clean and dry,, the birds themselves know what they want,,,, and when they want it :)

can remember talking to the late willie McAlpine about 20 odd years ago and he said that, that red grit was the best stuff he ever fed to his pigeons

talking about the late willie mc alpine,, i remember donaldson bros.  dunbar,, many years ago,, great, lifetime  fliers,   sadly deceased many years ago,,,their birds over the years had their red sandstone wall allmost falling down, with their birds constantly picking at it,over the years,, ....,   they would never repair it , but left the birds to pick :) on purpose :)
