Guest peter.j Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 what magnification microscope would be adequate for testing pigeon droppings ....yis pete
Guest Owen Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 You will need three levels of magnification. 40X, 100X and 400X. The 40 is to allow you to set it up, and you can see round worm etc. The 100 is the one I use most. You will see the cocci, hair worm, round worm easily here. The 400 is the one you would use for canker, hexamita and yeast. You can also see bacteria very clearly but it is another thing altogether to be able to identify it. A good indicator of a problem to come can be the acceleration in the bacterial activity. I can use the oil emersion and stain method of finding bacteria but I have never bothered with it because it is not a practical technique for us lay people. It is better to organise your loft ventilation to avoid the problems in the first place. I hope I have been of help.
Guest Owen Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 By the way, the microscopes sold by Aldi and Lidl are perfect for what you want. They are usually for sale just before Xmas for about 40:00. You will need to be on the ball to buy one because they sell out very quickly. Make sure that you have a light source built in and a moveable stage. Not all the microscopes offered to the Fancy are like that. They are essential for pigeon dropping analysis.
