Guest Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 (lineseed, hemp and peanuts) Lineseed is a perfect seed with a good relation between linolacid (omega 6) and linoleenacid (omega 3). Unfortunately our pigeons dont like to eat too much of it for different reasons as the flat scape and its sticky in their mouth. After eating it you can see sometimes that your pigeons shake their head to get rid of it. Als when we put lineseed free available at a loft they will never eat more then 4 graam per day. Another disadvantage is that the brownlineseed contains bleu-acid (yellowlineseed does not) Therefore its wise to give in your mix never more then 10% lineseed. When you feed also coal and turnip(?)seed the probleem get worse, because its poison and turns your pigeons bleu. In a mediterenian climate or warmer its important to feed linoacid and linoleenacid in proportions 2 to 1. Because this delays possible infectieons, however it seems that in our climate its of less importance and scientists are still puzzled about this. Saffloer and sunflowerseed are also seeds with wrong proportions for our pigeons, and compared to hemp and peanuts not suitable in big quantities. Hemp is a important food and our pigeons love to eat it as is also the case with peanuts. I like therefore to recommend hemp but this is difficult to export to some countries and also peanuts, because of the fatcontent of 47%. Peanuts have also the advantage o a good fillingcapability which keeps the droppings firm, whereby the before discussed smallseeds mis this. With all seeds we should always kept in mind that qualitycontrol is of utmost importance. There is a realistic danger of afflatoxinen and micotoxinen(?) however there is a lott of misunderstanding about this. Government rules and control by manufacturers and importers and a very dry storage off all seeds will prevent problems. All the seeds we use for our pigeons should be controlled also by the fanciers and not only peanuts because all seeds are exposed to the same dangers when not stored in the right way.
