i dont think the courriers are in this to help out the fanciers...not for one minute!

they are init to make money!

on the other hand i think some do really go over the top and work themselves too much ,not giving themselves a break.

their health should be paramount!

they cant spend the profits when their dead...some should get more staff or take on less workloads..nothing is worth risking your health over.

£30 or £40 the cost is the fuel thats what kills the job, having worked for Amtrak in the past I looked at how you could make money from doing just pigeons. The figures do not add up well even having a staged live link at central points, if driving is your thing go for it but if you fly birds out its not for you. The guys that do it I hope they are making a good living from it, cooperation is the key why not help each other by just linking together as a co-op pick your birds up drive to the next link pick up from them deliver when your out picking up again in your area?

Amtrak first and most success was Am and trak all, it only went down the tubes when it tried competing with the drosse and used more fuel in doing so. Livestock should have the very best in transit but how many of those vans have correct ventalation, anybody who has more than 20 birds on board should have 2 types of vents fitted rotating and 2 way electric vents.

Anybody interested in a Escort 1.8 Turbo Dl Ex-Police dog van it is an x reg plate 2000, elec mirrors, alarm and imob, secure locker, but the best thing is the Cherry number plate M1 9 Coo.  3 Side vents, Rotating vent plus 2 way electric vents, plus its fully lined in fibre glass  so it is an easy clean with a jet cleaner.  8)

I use to do this a a youngster. Put the birds in cardboard boxes with the name of the owner and the station the birds were to be delivered too. I would go to Temple Meads goods department where they would weigh the birds and charge me a few shillings to transport them. The owner would have to go to his local station to collect. I made a few quid on this as a youngster.

well i think the couriers make a dam good living!!!

Hi

I have not come on to start a argument but shortie you are wrong mate we did it for 7 months as you all know and we never made a penny infact we ended up using alot of our own money Numpty is right it ruins your family life as you never see them sleeping in your van wherever you might get time to stop you could be anywhere in the country and you would be lucky to get 4/5 hours sleep a night. Strapper i dont think all couriers are in it to make money but you are right in a sense maybe they think its a easy way to but believe me its not. I have said it before good luck to them all i have been in the courier game for 10 years and worked for the main couriers and i personally think that you guys need one of them that was as big as Amtrax to do it as they ship everything from every part of the country overnight and they make it look easy but look at the amount of vehicles involved. The only other way is for all couriers to link up but again they would make less money as it would then have to be split between them. As Pigeonforce have said people think its just diesel they pay for thats just a minor thing a courier has to pay for like they said what about everything else. We use to do around 8 drops to Scotland each trip and how ever many collections but again like Pigeonforce has said they were being collected from Kent, Cornwall etc and the one's being collected were going back to wherever in the country. When we had 3 vans before xmas each van was doing atleast 700/800 mile aday and costing us around £110 aday diesel then wages, insurance plus then our vans were hired at £200 a week each. Work it out 700/800 mile aday is over 18 hours aday driving so thats 18 hours aday wages and over £100 diesel already plus accessories as already mentioned. Sorry but it very very hard to cover the cost of all this so no they are not making as much money as everyone thinks they are.

Like i said didnt want to cause a argument but everything you just said is correct and as you know its not just abuse or travelling 100;s of miles to find out its a false address or a empty house then it goes further punctured tyre's vans being damaged on your own property etc etc but the question wasnt about that that it was about the price and for what you get paid for doing the job no its not worth it so i dont know how people can say couriers are charging too much we use to charge £25.00 from anywhere in the country to anywhere in the country and we got told everyday we were to deer if you can find anyone who will drive from Kent to Aberdeen for that then good luck to you the only people who will do this is Royal Mail but could you fit a pigeon in a box in a postbox ???

ITS THE COST OF THE CARRIAGE THAT IS THE KILLER WE ARE GETTING TAKEN TO THE CLEANERS WITH THERE REDICULISE PRICES I AM SURE I HAVE SPENT AT LEAST £800,00 THIS YEAR ALONE WE NEED TO DO SOMTHING ABOUT IT PUTS YOU OFF BUYING BIRDS WHEN THE TRANSPORT COSTS MORE THAN THE BIRDS CAN WE PUT OUR HEADS TOGETHER AND COME UP WITH A MORE REASONABLE TRANSPORT COST

the obvious answer is to collect your own and then see what that costs you

but the truth should be told this is cutthroat busness and affects everyone and then as you found its not fun and with every bit stress added accedents happen due to trying to cover others hassel and commitments then good working honest couiers get out like you . yes due to accedent but seriously would you have been able to keep getting prob for nothing other than you did a good job

I think if atleast 2 of the couriers got together and stayed strong and got through the starting process not making any money until they were well known then had most of the work available yes you could make a good little business we tried to join with a few and we had others trying to join with us but we were covering it just about with what we had. What happened to me in May was my own fault i was doing it on my own i was in Kent say at 18:00 one day and in Aberdeen at 16:00 the next yes i was making a little bit for myself but i was driving over 20 hours aday everyday and when i work it out i was paying myself around £1.50 a hour i would probably get more for delivering papers but i was doing it and i thought if i did it long enough and people knew i was doing a good job then i would make money but you cant do it on your own its impossible trust me i have proved that to myself

four couiers working together would solve lot problems and arrange collection from each other across the country

Ok so you got 4 couriers so split £30 or whatever they are charging between 4 ?? It wouldnt be possible unless you only done certain runs on certain days of the week but then you would have to hold pigeons for how many days/nights.

im talking of collections agreements on cost would have to be decided betwween them as for one they would not have the cost of say devon to stirling it woud cut they travel in half so if still wanting 30quid bird each well whats the point in joining together
