Guest Freebird Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 From my recollections of the birds I had in the 60s/70s it would appear that racing birds are bigger/heavier now than then. Is this correct and if so what in your opinions are the smallest racing breeds/family's now a days? Am I right in thinking that the smaller breeds are for distance? I was thinking of acquiring some small racers if I could source any, just for flying out with my tumblers. Thanks.
THE FIFER Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 I would say going back to the time you are on about, birds were much bigger and had heavy whattles, also you could easily tell a cock from a hen,
Guest Freebird Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 I would say going back to the time you are on about, birds were much bigger and had heavy whattles, also you could easily tell a cock from a hen, Hi Archie. I was in my early teens at the time so may be wrong but going by the strays I see on the streets they seem a lot bigger than the birds I raced. These birds were gifted to me by club members as when I joined it was really only homers I had. What are the smallest family's now?
THE FIFER Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 yes the streeters are sometimes large, but 2 day its a mix, regarding size, there is big and small in all breeds getting i think, but for sure going back I can never remember not being able to tell a cock from a hen, like now in some breeds,

Guest Freebird Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 smallest familys now i would say are Jan Thelans and Luc Van Coppenoles Hi Mark, how are you doing? What weight are these as I beleive the average weight of a racer to be around 500grams, Am I correct? The birds I have are around 300 grams (catalonians).

Davey B Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 smallest familys now i would say are Jan Thelans and Luc Van Coppenoles I've had, and still have, the bloodlines of Jan Theelans, direct via Stuart Wilcox, from this site, and a hen from Mr & Mr Clare amongst others. They weren't, and aren't, small birds what i've had of these lines. The main cock was medium to large in size actually. I know a partnership very well that have direct Luc Van Coppenolle's from his best, and these aren't small pigeons either. I've handled them, from over twenty birds i would say there are maybe three at the most that maybe could be described as small, but for me they are more medium sized pigeons imo, well balanced and quality, impressive birds, to me anyways. I've had smaller birds, some of the pieds & chequers in the Emerton family were quite petite, and the old grizzles of Jimmy Nic were quite small too.
Guest youngzimmy Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 I SEEM TO REMEMBER THE GITS FAMILY FROM BACK IN THE 60s BEING QUITE SMALL AND VERY AFFECTIVE AT THE DISTANCE OR MAYBE IT WAS THE ONES I HAD
Davey B Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 I wouldnt consider the Jan Theelens small birds - and have handled just about every Theelen stock bird Geoff Clare has at some time or another for hours on end when i worked for him. The smallest paticular line of a breed i have had or seen is the FVW of Les Wooff - Always found these birds to be very small (not all but majority) these are birds i also got to know quite well at the start of the Noughties. Les however did win consistently in the Staindrop club and Darlington & District Fed as well as the WDA so wasnt a slight on the pigeons. Aye, would agree with Les Wooff's Wildies, the hens in particular were small, but jeez when you crossed them! Set away a few lofts did Les!
OLDYELLOW Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 ones ive got are medium sized but probably smaller in comparison to other distance familys i was thinking of pairing the LVC x with a thelan i have , might be one fer 2011 lol the thelan was selected as a hen so imo its small fer a cock
Davey B Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 Yes without doubt - Great pigeon man and Cheryl of course - Think is she had carried her own interest through she would be flying well on her own now - Womans touch as you will know Dave from your own good lady. Gannin off topic, and sincere apologies to the op, but aye, again agree. LOL, think women have a calmer influence in the loft! :B
kingbilly2 Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 the spangel hen pigeons was the smalest well balanced birds i have had but the jan theelen hen i got at blackpool this year at the moldevel sale is the same
